His hands shook badly enough that I had poured his coffee into a travel mug with a lid.

Roy said he wanted to check on his father.

But according to Arthur, he barely looked at him.

He went straight to the kitchen.

To the cabinet where we kept medication.

I remembered the visit.

I remembered Roy standing at the counter.

I remembered thinking he was making coffee.

Arthur had noticed something I had not.

Roy opened the medicine cabinet.

He removed one of Arthur’s prescription bottles.

Read the label.

Then took another bottle from his jacket.

Roy shot to his feet.

“That is a lie.”

Mr. Katz did not raise his voice.

“Sit down.”

“I’m not listening to this.”

“You came here to discuss your father’s estate.”

“This isn’t an estate meeting.”

“No,” Mr. Katz said. “It has become considerably more serious.”

Roy remained standing.

Sandra looked at him.

“What bottle?”

He turned toward her.

“Nothing.”

“What bottle, Roy?”

“I don’t know.”

Arthur had heard that answer many times.

So had I.

Mr. Katz continued reading.

Arthur had not confronted Roy.

Instead, he waited until Roy left the kitchen.

Then he asked me to help him upstairs.

While I went to fetch his cane, Arthur returned to the cabinet.

He compared the bottles.

Something was wrong.

He quietly replaced the suspicious bottle with the original.

My hands went cold.

Arthur had never told me.

Not once.

Mr. Katz reached for the recorder.

Arthur’s voice returned.

“Helen, forgive me.”

I covered my mouth.

“I knew if I told you what I suspected, you would confront Roy before I understood what was happening.”

He was right.

“You would have protected me.”

Another pause.

“But I needed evidence more than protection.”

I closed my eyes.

That was so like him that it hurt.

Mr. Katz placed a medical report on the desk.

Arthur had arranged independent blood testing.

The results showed medication levels inconsistent with the prescribed dosage.

Not enough to prove intent.

Enough to justify fear.

Roy shook his head repeatedly.

“That could mean anything.”

Mr. Katz nodded.

“Arthur agreed.”

Roy looked surprised.

“That is why he kept investigating.”

Mr. Katz opened another envelope.

Inside was a security-company invoice.

Sandra frowned.

“What security company?”

I knew.

By then, I had finally understood part of Arthur’s plan.

Months after the fall, he asked me to hire someone to repair the kitchen smoke detector.

The technician spent nearly two hours there.

I later discovered that Arthur had arranged something else.

A camera.

Small enough that no visitor noticed it.

Positioned toward the medicine cabinet.

Roy stared at Mr. Katz.

“You recorded me?”

“Your father recorded activity inside his own kitchen.”

“You can’t—”

Mr. Katz removed a memory card.

Roy stopped speaking.

Sandra looked at him.

Then at the card.

Then back at him.

Fear moved across her face.

Mr. Katz inserted the card into a laptop.

The video opened.

Our kitchen appeared on-screen.

The date in the corner read September 18.

I saw myself cross the frame carrying laundry.

Arthur sat at the table.

Then Roy entered.

Watching the dead move is a peculiar kind of pain.

There was Arthur.

Thin.

Alive.

His head turned as Roy passed.

I wanted to reach through the screen.

I wanted to warn the woman carrying laundry that she would spend years remembering this day incorrectly.

The recorded version of me disappeared upstairs.

Roy walked to the cabinet.

He looked over his shoulder.

Then he removed Arthur’s medication.

No one in Mr. Katz’s office breathed.

Roy took another bottle from his pocket.

Sandra whispered, “Roy.”

He did not answer.

On-screen, he exchanged the bottles.

Then a voice came from somewhere outside the camera’s view.

A woman’s voice.

Sandra’s.

“Did you do it?”

The Sandra beside me went white.

Roy turned toward her.

“What?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

The recording continued.

Sandra’s voice again.

“You said he wouldn’t notice.”

Roy stared at the screen.

His recorded self answered.

The audio was imperfect, but the meaning was clear.

He told her nobody would know.

Present-day Roy backed away from the desk.

“You were there,” he said.

Sandra stood.

“You knew that.”

“No. You told me you left.”

“I came back.”

“Why?”

“To get Dad’s papers.”

“What papers?”

“The insurance documents you wanted.”

They were no longer talking to us.

They were turning on each other.

Arthur had predicted that too.

Mr. Katz stopped the video.

“This does not establish every fact surrounding Arthur’s medical decline,” he said. “But it establishes enough that nobody in this room should make careless statements.”

Roy rubbed both hands over his face.

Sandra sat again.

I remained fixed on the frozen image of my kitchen.

Arthur was visible in the corner.

His face was turned toward his son.

Watching.

Knowing.

I remembered the hours after the fall.

Arthur had been at the bottom of the staircase when I found him.

His eyes were open.

His first words were not about pain.

He asked whether Roy was still in the house.

At the time I thought confusion had caused it.

Now I wondered.

“What happened before he fell?” I asked.

Mr. Katz looked at me.

“That is addressed later.”

“I want to know now.”

“Helen.”

“Please.”

His expression softened.

Then he nodded.

Arthur had written that after seeing Roy switch the medication, he decided to watch rather than confront him.

He replaced the pills.

He arranged tests.

He began documenting missing property and unexplained withdrawals.

And he listened.

For the first time in his life, Arthur stopped defending his children from his own suspicions.

What he discovered frightened him.

Roy had been researching the value of the house.

Sandra had photographed documents in Arthur’s study.

Both had repeatedly asked questions about his will.

But something else troubled him more.

They were not acting alone.

I looked at Mr. Katz.

“Who?”

He turned the page.

Arthur had not named the person.

Not there.

Instead he had written that someone close to the family understood his medication schedule, knew when I left the house, and knew details of his finances Roy and Sandra should not have known.

Sandra shook her head.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

Mr. Katz ignored her.

Arthur began making the Tuesday visits after that discovery.

Each visit added another piece of evidence.

Bank records.

Medical reports.

Photographs.

Copies of correspondence.

Audio recordings.

The shoebox was not an inheritance file.

It was a chronology.

A record of the moment Arthur stopped accepting convenient explanations.

Roy stared at it.

“What did he think we were doing?”

I answered before Mr. Katz could.

“He didn’t know.”

Roy looked at me.

“That was why he kept looking.”

For once, Roy had nothing to say.

Mr. Katz reopened the video.

“There is another recording.”

The date was two weeks after Arthur’s fall.

Night.

The kitchen was dark.

At 11:47, the side door opened.

Sandra entered.

She was not alone.

Only part of the second person appeared in frame.

A shoulder.

A hand.

Then a voice.

Low enough that the microphone barely captured it.

Sandra looked toward the cabinet.

The unidentified person said something.

Mr. Katz increased the volume.

We listened again.

This time I heard it.

“Arthur knows.”

Sandra’s recorded face tightened.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Roy turned toward his sister.

“Who were you talking to?”

She did not answer.

“Sandra.”

“I don’t remember.”

“You don’t remember sneaking into Dad’s house at midnight?”

“I said I don’t remember.”

Mr. Katz froze the image.

The unidentified person’s hand rested briefly against the counter.

A ring was visible.

Heavy.

Gold.

A dark stone in its center.

Something about it bothered me.

I had seen that ring.

Not recently.

Not clearly.

But somewhere.

Arthur had seen it too.

Mr. Katz reached into the shoebox and removed a photograph.

It showed the same hand.

The same ring.

Arthur had circled it.

Beneath the photograph he had written one sentence.

ASK WHO REALLY BENEFITS IF I DIE.

My skin prickled.

Roy stared at Sandra.

She stared at the ring.

Mr. Katz closed the laptop.

“We are not finished.”

Roy laughed once, without humor.

“What else could there possibly be?”

Mr. Katz opened a thick folder.

“The house.”

Sandra straightened.

For all the accusations, all the evidence, all the frightening implications, that single word still had power over them.

“The house belongs to us,” she said.

Mr. Katz looked at her.

“No.”

Roy blinked.

“What?”

“The house does not belong to you.”

He turned toward Sandra.

“It does not belong to you either.”

Then he looked at me.

“Helen, Arthur asked me to tell you this personally.”

My heart began beating harder.

Mr. Katz placed a document on the desk.

“The house was never going to pass through Arthur’s estate.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Roy Expected His
