alone.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Roy started toward the door.

I stepped in front of him.

“You are not coming into my me.

Mr. Katz said he would come with me.

Malcolm offered too.

I refused him.

Not from distrust exactly.

I simply could not fill Arthur’s house with every ghost from his past at once.

Before we left, Mr. Katz placed the blue folder in his locked cabinet.

Roy watched the key stayed in the car until he approached.

“What is it?”

“The gate.”

He looked.

Then toward the house.

Nothing moved.

The curtains were unchanged.

Front door shut.

But Arthur had taught me one thing before he died.

Do not let normal appearances make decisions for you.

Mr. Katz called the police.

Two officers arrived.

They checked the doors.

No obvious forced entry.

Then one of them found a basement window unlatched.

Inside, several rooms had been searched.

Drawers open.

Closets disturbed.

Arthur’s study torn apart.

Someone had been looking for something.

The attic door stood open.

My heart dropped.

I climbed the stairs behind the officer.

The cedar chest was still there.

Its lid hung crooked.

Papers scattered across the floor.

Old photographs crushed beneath someone’s shoes.

The chest was empty.

Roy had not known about it.

Sandra claimed she did not.

Mr. Katz had never heard Arthur mention it.

Malcolm knew only the clue Arthur mailed him.

That left one person who had spent twenty-five years learning how to reach into Arthur’s life without being seen.

Victor.

I knelt beside the empty chest.

The officer asked what had been inside.

“I don’t know.”

That was true.

Then I noticed a thin line in the dust.

A rectangle.

Something had rested beneath the chest.

Not inside it.

I ran my fingers along the floorboard.

One plank shifted.

Arthur.

Of course.

I pressed harder.

The board lifted.

Beneath it was a narrow cavity.

Inside lay an old metal film canister.

My hands shook as I opened it.

No flash drive.

Only a small key.

And a photograph.

Arthur and I stood in front of a train-station locker bank during a trip four years earlier.

On the back he had written:

NOT EVERYTHING IMPORTANT SHOULD STAY AT HOME.

Beneath that was a number.

317.

Mr. Katz leaned over my shoulder.

“Station locker?”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something else.

A fresh smear of blood on the edge of the floorboard.

Someone had cut themselves while searching.

Whoever had come for Arthur’s evidence had failed to find the key.

But they had been inside my house while I was
