repeatedly.

Evelyn Marsh.

A forensic accountant hired briefly by the company’s insurer.

She questioned inconsistencies in the case against Malcolm.

Then vanished from the investigation.

Roy recognized the name.

“Dad hated her.”

“Why?”

“She kept saying the numbers didn’t make sense.”

That sounded less like a reason for hatred than a reason for discomfort.

Arthur, convinced Malcolm betrayed him, would not have appreciated someone challenging the conclusion.

“What happened to her?” I asked.

Elena searched.

Evelyn Marsh was ninety-one.

Still alive.

Living in assisted housing three states “mailed,” not “received.”

We needed her.

Police were already approaching Victor’s river office.

I was kept on speaker with one detective.

The building was a narrow three-story structure that had once housed insurance offices.

Now mostly vacant.

Leonard Shaw’s investment company occupied the second floor.

Officers entered.

No resistance.

No Victor.

No Claire.

No Malcolm.

But they found evidence people had left hurriedly.

Coffee warm.

Computer running.

A chair overturned.

In a back room, blood on the floor.

Not much.

Enough to matter.

Then they found Leonard.

Alive.

Locked inside a supply closet.

His hands were bound.

He claimed Malcolm attacked him.

That contradicted the parking-lot footage phone.

Claire’s.

The last outgoing call was to me.

Victor had allowed it.

Why?

Because he wanted us to follow the clue.

Or because Claire created an opportunity he could not prevent.

The difference mattered.

Leonard eventually asked for an attorney.

Before he stopped talking, he said one useful thing.

Victor had been obsessed with an old package.

He believed Arthur recently learned where it was.

That was why pressure intensified during Arthur’s final year.

The package contained originals that could not be dismissed as copies.

Signatures.

Handwriting.

Physical documents.

Possibly something else.

“What else?” Elena asked.

Leonard looked at her.

“A confession.”

The word moved through the qualifies,” Sam said.

A nurse brought Evelyn to the phone.

Her voice was thin but alert.

Mr. Katz introduced himself.

Then had been tracing the package.

“How long ago?”

“About eighteen months.”

Arthur’s investigation and Victor’s search had been racing each other.

Evelyn refused to tell Leonard anything.

Then Arthur found Thomas.

And Thomas contacted her.

“What did Thomas do with the package?”

“I don’t know.”

The key.

Thomas had a key Arthur gave him.

Or perhaps Arthur returned it.

Maybe the package was secured somewhere requiring both.

Roy paced.

“If Thomas had the originals, why didn’t he give them to Dad?”

“Maybe he did,” Sandra said.

“No. Victor still wants Thomas’s key.”

Mr. Katz looked at me.

“Unless the key opens where Thomas put them.”

We needed Thomas conscious.

The hospital reported he was stable but sedated.

Police guarded his room.

Victor could not reach him easily now.

But Claire remained missing.

Then the detective questioning Leonard called.

He had changed his story.

Not from conscience.

From fear.

Victor had abandoned him.

Leonard realized he might be blamed for Diane’s death and Claire’s disappearance.

He wanted protection.

In exchange, he offered Victor’s likely destination.

An old freight depot near the river.

The same rail system connected to Arthur’s former plant.

Victor had used it for storage through another shell company.

Police mobilized again.

This time Elena went.

Roy insisted.

Police refused initially.

Then Leonard revealed Roy knew the depot layout from years earlier.

They took him under supervision.

Sandra stayed with me.

She watched her brother leave.

“He might actually be trying.”

“Yes.”

“You still hate him.”

I considered it.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Hate would require more energy than I have.”

“What do you buildings.

Abandoned loading bays.

Old railcars rusting behind chain-link fencing.

Police entered cautiously.

The first building was empty.

The second contained office furniture and boxes of shredded documents.

The third—

They found Claire.

Alive.

Bound to a chair in an office.

I had to sit when there.

Claire did not believe him.

Victor demanded to know where Margaret’s package went.

Claire knew only part of Arthur’s research.

Enough to mention Evelyn.

Victor already knew that route.

He wanted Thomas.

More precisely, Thomas’s key.

Malcolm objected when Victor threatened Claire.

They fought.

That explained the blood.

Malcolm helped Claire escape the office, but Victor caught them near the parking area.

Leonard panicked.

Victor forced them into another vehicle.

At the depot, Malcolm turned on Victor openly.

“What happened?” I asked.

Elena said, “Claire heard a gunshot.”

My stomach were searching the grounds.

They found blood near the rail siding.

A lot.

No body.

Malcolm’s fate remained unknown.

But Claire was alive.

That was enough for one minute.

Then she asked to speak to me.

Her voice cracked when she said my name.

I closed my eyes.

“You idiot.”

She laughed once and started crying.

“I know.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Did Victor hurt
