ceiling.

New conduit.

Security cameras.

Someone had renovated my father’s hidden corridor.

Recently.

Harris ordered me behind the officers.

We moved slowly.

The passage ended at a steel door I did not remember.

Locked.

Then we heard crying.

Muffled.

A woman.

“Rachel.”

Harris raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

A man’s voice came through the other side.

“Leave.”

Harris identified himself.

The man laughed.

Then said the detective’s name.

Not his title.

His name.

Harris’s expression changed.

“How do you know who I am?”

No answer.

I stepped forward.

“Martin?”

Silence.

Then the man spoke.

“Hello, Claire.”

Every hair on my arms lifted.

Not Mrs. Carter.

Claire.

The name my father had used when he was angry, frightened, or trying to make me listen.

I moved closer to the steel door.

“Where is Rachel?”

“Safe.”

“Daniel?”

“Safe enough.”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Harris whispered for me to stop talking.

I ignored him.

“Why?”

The man answered calmly.

“Because you have something that belongs to me.”

“My money?”

“No.”

“My father’s house?”

“No.”

“What, then?”

There was a mechanical click.

The steel door unlocked.

Weapons rose around me.

The door opened slowly.

No one stood behind it.

The room beyond contained only a chair, a table, a camera, and one old photograph.

An officer cleared the room.

Harris allowed me forward.

The photograph showed my father outside the blue house decades earlier.

Beside him stood a young woman.

I recognized her from photographs Rachel had shown me.

Rachel’s mother.

Beside her was a young man I did not know.

And beside him—

A girl.

Twelve years old.

Thin knees.

Dark hair.

A white summer dress.

Me.

I stared at my own childhood face.

“I don’t remember this.”

Harris turned the photograph over.

Four words were written on the back.

YOUR FATHER LIED.

The lights went out.

Rachel screamed somewhere in the darkness.

Click here to continue reading: PART
