it.”

“Victor claims he helped cover it up.”

“That part could be true.”

Harris asked, “Where are the books?”

“Richard has them.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

An older man sat in the back seat of a car.

Silver hair.

Thin face.

Dark overcoat.

I had not seen him in eight years.

But I recognized him immediately.

Richard Vale.

My father’s former CFO.

Apparently, my uncle.

The photograph had been taken recently enough that the digital timestamp read twelve minutes earlier.

A message followed.

YOUR HUSBAND IS TELLING YOU HALF THE TRUTH.

Daniel saw my face.

“What?”

I showed Harris.

Then another message arrived.

ASK HIM WHAT HE PUT IN YOUR FATHER’S WHISKEY.

I looked at Daniel.

He turned white.

Not pale.

White.

Every answer I had extracted from him suddenly became irrelevant.

“What did you put in my father’s whiskey?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Claire.”

I stepped toward the bed.

“What did you put in it?”

“I didn’t know what it was.”

The monitor began beeping faster.

Harris moved beside me.

“What were you given?”

Daniel’s mouth trembled.

“A vial.”

“By Richard?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night your father died.”

My hands went cold.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You told me you were at work.”

“I lied.”

“What did Richard tell you was in the vial?”

“Something that would make your father sick.”

“For what purpose?”

“To delay a meeting.”

“What meeting?”

“With federal investigators.”

I stopped.

“My father was talking to federal investigators?”

“He was going to.”

“About Richard.”

“Yes.”

Everything narrowed to Daniel’s face.

“What happened after you put it in his drink?”

“He drank some.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“You poured it.”

“I left before he finished.”

“And when he died?”

“I panicked.”

“You married me eleven months later.”

His eyes opened.

Tears ran toward his ears against the pillow.

“I loved you.”

The rage that entered me then was quieter than anything I had felt before.

“That may be the cruelest thing you’ve said.”

He looked away.

Harris asked, “Who called you after Carter died?”

“Richard.”

“What did he say?”

“That the dose wasn’t supposed to kill him.”

“And you believed that?”

“I wanted to.”

“Did Victor know?”

“Richard said Victor would handle the certificate.”

My father’s heart attack.

Victor’s help.

Richard’s plan.

Daniel’s vial.

The structure was finally visible.

Not complete.

But visible.

I had married one of the men who helped set my father’s death in motion.

Perhaps unknowingly.

Perhaps not.

The difference no longer felt large enough.

My phone vibrated again.

Richard’s photograph vanished from the message thread.

A final line appeared.

THOMAS HAS VICTOR.

MICHAEL HAS RICHARD.

AND ONLY ONE OF THEM KNOWS WHERE YOUR FATHER’S ORIGINAL RECORDS ARE.

Then another:

CHOOSE WHO YOU FIND FIRST.

I showed Harris.

He immediately began issuing orders.

I looked at Daniel one last time.

For twelve years, he had known what he poured into my father’s drink.

He had watched me grieve.

Held me at the funeral.

Helped carry boxes from my father’s office.

Slept beside me afterward.

And somewhere inside that same man, hidden beneath debt and fear and the convenient name of love, had been the knowledge that he might have helped kill him.

I turned toward the door.

“Claire.”

I stopped but did not face him.

“I am sorry.”

I waited for the words to hurt.

They did not.

That frightened me more.

Outside the room, Harris caught up.

“We have two possible hostage locations.”

“Victor and Thomas?”

“One.”

“Richard and Michael?”

“The other.”

“Which is more important?”

“That isn’t how we decide.”

“It is if one of them has the records.”

Harris studied me.

“You received the instruction to choose.”

“Yes.”

“Then whoever sent it wants you involved in the decision.”

“I know.”

“Which means choosing either location may be exactly what they expect.”

I looked back toward Daniel’s room.

For years, everyone around me had assumed I would react to whatever truth they placed in front of me.

Anger.

Grief.

Fear.

Betrayal.

They had designed my choices by controlling what I knew.

“No.”

Harris frowned.

“No what?”

“I’m not choosing Victor or Richard.”

“Then what are you doing?”

I took out my phone.

“My father said not to let Victor control the records.”

“Yes.”

“He also said he was going to speak to both his daughters.”

Harris waited.

“That means he expected Rachel to be able to verify something.”

“What?”

“The settlement.”

I looked toward the wing where Rachel was recovering.

“Everyone is chasing the men who hid the truth.”

Then I started walking.

“I’m going to ask my sister where our father hid it.”

Click here to continue reading: PART
