intended to put it.”

“Where?”

“With something Robert gave her shortly before he died.”

I closed my eyes.

My parents had exchanged secrets like weapons.

“What?”

Samuel said one word.

“Locket.”

I knew the locket.

My mother wore it nearly every day after my father died.

Small.

Gold.

Oval.

When she died, it came to me.

I had never opened the inner compartment because it seemed sealed.

It was in my jewelry safe at home.

“What is inside?”

Samuel answered calmly.

“Proof that neither Daniel nor Evan administered the dose that killed Robert.”

“Then who did?”

“You already know.”

“Voss.”

“No.”

The word chilled me.

“Voss injected him.”

“Yes.”

“But not with the fatal compound.”

“Then what?”

“A stabilizer.”

Everything shifted.

Victor’s account.

Richard’s confession.

The tape.

All of it pointed at Voss.

Samuel was reversing it.

“Why should I believe you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

At least he understood that.

“Open Margaret’s locket.”

“Why?”

“Because she recorded what happened after the tape stopped.”

My hands went cold.

“Another recording?”

“Yes.”

“She had one?”

“She made one.”

“Where?”

“In the locket.”

That sounded impossible.

Then I remembered my mother’s antique locket had a thicker back than normal.

A miniature data storage device could have been installed later.

“What will it show?”

Samuel said nothing.

“Samuel.”

His voice softened.

“It will show who held the syringe that stopped your father’s heart.”

The call ended.

Rachel called again immediately afterward.

This time I answered.

“We found Evan,” I said.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

She exhaled.

“Did he destroy the samples?”

“No.”

“Then Victor was wrong.”

“Not entirely.”

I looked at Evan.

“He did drug Dad.”

Silence.

“He says he added a sedative.”

“Do you believe him?”

“I believe the lab can tell us.”

Rachel whispered, “Where is he?”

“Standing ten feet from me.”

“Let me talk to him.”

I handed Evan the phone.

He took it.

For several seconds neither sibling spoke.

Then Rachel said something I could not hear.

Evan closed his eyes.

“I know.”

She spoke again.

His face tightened.

“No.”

Another pause.

Then he said, “Because if I came home, Samuel would have found all of you.”

Rachel’s voice rose loudly enough that I heard the words.

“You don’t get to call abandonment protection.”

Evan looked at the floor.

“No.”

A long silence.

Then Rachel said, “Did you kill him?”

Evan’s eyes lifted to mine.

“No.”

“Did you help?”

“Yes.”

That distinction was brutal.

Rachel began crying.

Evan said nothing comforting.

Perhaps he finally understood comfort was not what she needed.

Harris took the phone.

“We have to move.”

Police escorted Evan into custody.

The blood samples went under federal guard.

The laboratory became a crime scene.

I drove home with Harris behind me.

My house felt unfamiliar.

Not unsafe.

Just connected to too many versions of myself.

The wife who trusted Daniel.

The daughter who trusted Victor.

The friend who trusted Rachel.

The woman my mother had tried to protect without telling her what danger existed.

I opened the safe.

The locket lay inside a velvet box.

Gold.

Oval.

A tiny engraved M.

Margaret.

I carried it to the kitchen table.

Harris put on gloves.

“There may be evidence inside.”

“It belongs to me.”

“That doesn’t change what it is.”

I let him photograph it.

Then I pressed the seam.

Nothing.

Twisted the hinge.

Nothing.

Finally I remembered something my mother always did before opening it.

She ran her fingernail across the lower edge.

A hidden catch released.

The back popped open.

Inside, beneath the photograph of my parents, was a tiny memory card.

Harris stared.

“Samuel was right.”

That frightened me more than if he had lied.

We inserted the card into an isolated device.

One video file.

Timestamped the night my father died.

The image shook.

My mother had placed a phone or camera behind a decorative screen.

The living room appeared.

My father lay on the sofa.

Victor beside him.

Dr. Voss preparing a syringe.

Richard pacing.

Samuel standing near the
