in.”

“No.”

Rachel shut her eyes.

“Evan.”

“I can’t yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel still has someone.”

“Who?”

Evan hesitated.

“Daniel.”

My stomach tightened.

“Daniel is in the hospital under guard.”

“Not anymore.”

Harris was already reaching for his radio.

“What happened?”

“Samuel arranged a transfer.”

“To where?”

“I don’t know.”

“How?”

“Someone inside the hospital system changed the transport order.”

Harris cursed.

He called immediately.

The answer came within a minute.

Daniel’s room was empty.

The officer outside had believed he was being taken for imaging.

The transport team was fake.

I felt no marital panic.

That surprised me.

But I felt something.

Daniel knew too much.

And Samuel still knew how to move people through systems.

Evan said, “Samuel wants the log for Daniel.”

“Why would you care?” I asked.

Silence.

Then:

“Because Daniel is the only living person besides Richard who can prove Samuel recruited him before your father died.”

Daniel had said Richard recruited him.

Another half-truth.

“Samuel recruited Daniel too?”

“Yes.”

“Through Richard?”

“Yes.”

“So Daniel worked for both.”

“He didn’t always know it.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

One more layer.

“Where is Daniel?”

“I’m trying to find him.”

“And Samuel?”

“Same.”

Rachel said, “Come to us.”

“No.”

“Evan.”

“If Samuel sees me surrender, Daniel dies.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know Samuel.”

A pause.

Then he said, “Check the old Carter employee clinic.”

My father’s company had once maintained a private clinic for executives and workers.

Closed for years.

“Why there?”

“Because Samuel likes places where old credentials still open doors.”

The line ended.

Harris ordered units there.

Rachel looked at me.

“Are we going?”

I looked at the page our mothers had hidden.

Do not silence one daughter to protect another.

Then I looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Together?”

For the first time, the answer came easily.

“Yes.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: Samuel Used Daniel as His Last Bargaining Chip,
