WRONG DAUGHTER.

Another.

AND SHE GAVE IT TO ME YEARS AGO.

Rachel went pale.

“What?”

Samuel sent a third image.

A small silver music box.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“I know that.”

“What is it?”

“Dad gave it to me at the blue house.”

“The day you met him?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to it?”

Her eyes filled with dread.

“I gave it to Evan.”

“When?”

“Before his boat accident.”

“Why?”

“He said he wanted something that proved Dad acknowledged me.”

The child Robert trusted had been Rachel.

The object had gone to Evan.

Samuel claimed Evan gave it to him.

“Did Evan know what was inside?”

“I don’t know.”

Mercer stood abruptly.

“If Samuel has the registry—”

“He’s had it for years.”

“No.”

“What?”

Mercer stared at the image.

“That box is only half.”

“The other half.”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

His eyes moved to me.

“Robert said one daughter would have what the other needed.”

Rachel had the music box.

Which meant I had the second piece.

I thought of childhood objects.

Jewelry.

Photographs.

Keys.

Then I remembered the wooden box at Windham Station.

My father’s cassette tapes.

The notebook.

The envelope.

Something else had been beneath the false lining.

A small brass cylinder Harris had logged as unidentified.

I had barely noticed it.

Harris remembered too.

“The evidence vault.”

Mercer nodded.

“If it fits that music box, the registry may still be recoverable.”

“But Samuel has the box.”

Rachel looked at me.

“And he knows we have the key.”

My phone rang.

Samuel.

I answered.

“You want the brass cylinder.”

“Yes.”

“And you have the music box.”

“Yes.”

“Then neither of us has the registry.”

A pause.

“Not yet.”

“What do you want?”

“You and Rachel.”

“For the cylinder?”

“For an exchange.”

“What exchange?”

“The key for Jonathan Mercer.”

I looked at Mercer.

Samuel knew he was alive.

Of course he did.

Mercer shook his head.

“No.”

Samuel continued.

“Midnight tomorrow.”

“Where?”

“You’ll receive coordinates.”

“And if we don’t come?”

Samuel’s voice became almost gentle.

“Then the people Robert tried to expose twenty years ago will learn exactly where both his daughters are.”

The call ended.

Mercer stared at me.

“He’s bluffing.”

“No,” I said.

Samuel’s greatest weapon had never been the gun.

It was the people behind him.

And if the registry truly named them, the brass cylinder did not merely open evidence.

It opened a list of enemies who had spent twenty years believing they were safe.

<a
