pendant.”

My blood went cold.

“How?”

“Because Robert never understood that hiding evidence from me was easier than hiding his habits.”

“Is Edward Grant alive?”

Silence.

Rachel stepped beside me.

“Samuel.”

He heard her.

“Rachel.”

“Answer.”

A faint sigh.

“My father is irrelevant.”

“That means yes.”

“He is ninety-three.”

Alive.

The original architect.

“Where?”

Samuel said nothing.

“Is he one of the people you’re protecting?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Samuel’s voice became hard.

“He is the reason I need that registry destroyed.”

“Why?”

“Because Robert added one name that never belonged there.”

“Edward.”

“No.”

A pause.

“Mine.”

I frowned.

“You created the network.”

“I inherited it.”

“So?”

“My father designed everything to make me responsible when it collapsed.”

The irony was almost beautiful.

Samuel had spent his life manipulating others through inherited guilt while his own father had done the same to him.

“You want the registry because it proves Edward was behind it first.”

“Yes.”

“Then why destroy it?”

“Because it also proves what I did after.”

At least he did not pretend innocence.

“Midnight,” he said.

“Bring the cylinder.”

“And Mercer?”

“You can have him.”

“We already have him.”

Silence.

Samuel had not known.

That mattered.

“You’re losing track,” I said.

His voice changed.

“Be careful, Claire.”

“No. You should be.”

I ended the call.

Rachel stared at me.

“You just made him angry.”

“He murdered our father.”

“I don’t think politeness would repair the relationship.”

For the first time in days, she laughed.

It lasted only a second.

But it mattered.

Then Mercer said something from behind us.

“If Samuel didn’t know I was already here, the photograph of the cottage wasn’t taken by him.”

We turned.

Of course.

Samuel had sent it.

But someone else might have taken it and forwarded it.

“Who knew Mercer was here?” Harris asked.

Mercer’s face tightened.

“One person.”

“Who?”

“My daughter.”

The daughter who believed he abandoned her.

He had contacted her after all.

“When?”

“Last year.”

“What’s her name?”

Mercer hesitated.

“Emily.”

Harris searched.

Emily Mercer.

Age forty-two.

Corporate compliance attorney.

Current employer:

Vale Holdings.

Richard’s company.

The room fell silent.

Jonathan Mercer’s daughter had spent six years working for Richard Vale.

And she knew her supposedly missing father was alive.

<a
