institutions.

One operator for my planned arrest used a code associated with law enforcement.

Harris stared at it.

“So Mercer was right.”

“What?”

“Samuel still has people inside.”

That was why operations leaked.

Why transport orders changed.

Why he knew police still.

“You know him.”

“My supervisor.”

The room changed instantly.

Garner had approved resources.

Seen case updates.

Known answer.

Station records showed Garner left twenty minutes earlier.

Destination not logged.

“Lock him out of every system.”

Nora moved.

Harris alerted internal affairs and federal agents.

Suddenly even police headquarters felt exposed.

Rachel looked at me.

“The midnight exchange.”

“Garner knows about it.”

“Yes.”

“Unless Harris never entered it.”

Harris shook his head.

“I kept the location off official channels.”

Good.

At least one thing Samuel might not know.

Then Nora found another document in Emily’s archive.

A conversation transcript.

Richard and Garner.

Two weeks earlier.

Garner warned Richard that “the Carter matter” was reopening.

Richard replied:

Grant said the them.

“She knew Richard was talking about her father.”

Mercer looked stricken.

“She put herself inside his company because of did.”

“Yes.”

“But don’t take away her agency because guilt feels more familiar.”

Rachel glanced at me.

I knew she understood.

Our father’s choices shaped us.

They did not own every choice after.

Harris’s phone rang.

Agents at the farm.

No Emily.

But signs someone had stayed recently.

A basement office contained more files.

And blood.

Mercer stood.

“How much?”

“Not enough to indicate fatal injury.”

“That means nothing.”

Harris kept listening.

They found a broken phone.

Laptop missing.

A handwritten message on the wall.

Not blood.

Black marker.

GRANT KNOWS.

Below it:

EAST DOCK. MIDNIGHT.

Rachel stared at me.

“The same exchange location?”

Likely.

Emily had planned to be there.

Maybe before Samuel contacted us.

Why?

Nora searched Emily’s archive for EAST DOCK.

One result.

A shipping manifest scheduled midnight.

Container number.

Origin: entirely.”

“What?”

“Edward is too old to run anything.”

“Still alive.”

“Yes.”

“And possibly being brought here.”

Harris looked at the manifest.

“You think the container holds a person?”

“Not necessarily.”

“Then what?”

Mercer’s face became grim.

“Edward’s archive.”

The original network records.

Before Samuel.

If Edward had preserved his own leverage, the midnight dock transfer could contain evidence older than my father’s registry.

Samuel wanted our cylinder because combining Robert’s registry with Edward’s archive might expose the entire network across two generations.

“Emily discovered the shipment,” Rachel said.

“Yes.”

“And Samuel discovered Emily discovered it.”

Exactly.

The exchange was never about Mercer.

It was about the dock.

Get both daughters there.

Get the cylinder.

Intercept Edward’s archive.

Eliminate remaining witnesses.

One location.

One night.

Samuel’s terminal event.

Nora said, “We can seize the container suggesting?”

“Let him think he has it.”

Rachel understood first.

“We go.”

“Controlled.”

“You just argued against everyone else deciding danger for us.”

“I’m deciding for myself.”

“And me?”

“You decide for yourself.”

She held my eyes.

“I go.”

Harris looked unhappy enough to age visibly.

“No improvisation.”

“Agreed.”

“We replace the cylinder with a copy.”

Nora shook her head.

“Samuel may test it.”

“Then the real cylinder stays close with an undercover agent.”

Mercer said, “Samuel knows faces.”

“Not every federal agent.”

Michael’s voice came from the doorway.

He had been brought under guard after requesting to the visible avenger.”

“Yes.”

Samuel would let Michael commit crimes, kill Richard perhaps, then hand him to police.

Another disposable piece.

Michael pointed to three operator codes.

“I know these.”

“Names?”

He gave them.

One dock security contractor.

One private pilot.

One former paramedic.

Nora confirmed payments.

Good.

The net tightened.

Then Michael saw Emily’s name in the surveillance folder.

His face Robert’s half.

Emily possessed Edward’s encryption key for the older archive.

Midnight was not merely an exchange.

It was an assembly.

Every piece Samuel needed would converge.

Rachel looked at me.

“He planned to bring all the keys together.”

“And then remove the people holding them.”

Harris stared at the TERMINAL EVENT schedule.

Exactly.

The document was not a contingency.

It was the endgame.

I looked at my name.

FINANCIAL EXPOSURE / was exact.

Harris closed the folder.

“We have less than six hours.”

Michael looked at the list one more time.

Then pointed to the operator code beside Rachel’s planned accident.

“I know this one too.”

“Who?”

His face hardened.

“Evan.”

Rachel stopped
