Port security had quietly diverted ordinary workers without explaining why. Harris had refused to trust the usual communications network, so everyone involved carried temporary radios issued less than an hour earlier.

Rachel and I waited inside an unmarked van three blocks away.

Between us sat a padded evidence case containing the replica brass cylinder.

The real one remained with Nora in a separate command vehicle.

Rachel kept rubbing her thumb against the edge of her seat belt.

“Nervous?”

“Terrified.”

“Good.”

She looked at exhaustion had changed.

At first it made everything blurry.

Now it stripped away unnecessary reactions.

I no longer wondered whether Daniel loved me.

I no longer wondered whether my father loved Rachel.

I no longer wondered whether my mother had been good or bad for staying silent.

Those questions had answers too complicated to help us survive midnight.

The radio clicked.

Harris’s voice.

“Movement at the east gate.”

Nora leaned toward a monitor.

A black sedan legs.

Oxygen tubing ran beneath his nose.

His white hair was combed neatly back.

Nothing about him resembled the architect of a network that had shaped our family for decades.

Then he lifted one hand.

Three armed men moved immediately.

Power did not require physical strength.

Samuel arrived from the opposite side of the yard.

Alone.

Or apparently alone.

He wore a dark coat.

No visible weapon.

Father and son faced each other beneath industrial floodlights.

For
