didn’t you?”

His face twisted.

“I loved you.”

I almost laughed.

He saw it.

“I know how that sounds.”

“No. You don’t.”

“I do.”

“You keep saying love as though it operates separately from behavior.”

He said nothing.

“You lied about why we be true.”

He looked startled.

“So what?”

He stopped.

“Love does not erase exploitation.”

“No.”

“It doesn’t turn manipulation into devotion.”

“No.”

“It doesn’t make a dangerous marriage safe.”

“No.”

“Then stop using it as your defense.”

He swallowed.

“It isn’t a defense.”

Good.

Finally.

I placed the amendment on the bedside table.

“Samuel planned to have me arrested.”

Daniel stared.

“For the offshore account.”

“Yes.”

“Then the derivative directly.”

“When did you suspect?”

“Two years ago.”

Again.

The year everything converged.

“What happened?”

“Victor told me about Rachel.”

“And?”

“He told me that once Rachel’s status became provable, the spouse rider should become irrelevant.”

“Because she was another heir.”

“Yes.”

“Samuel didn’t want that.”

“No.”

“So keeping Rachel hidden preserved your route.”

Daniel looked sick.

“Yes.”

Now Victor’s threats against Rachel made another kind of sense.

Perhaps Victor believed keeping her hidden prevented Samuel from targeting her.

But it also maintained Daniel’s power.

Every attempt to protect someone strengthened another risk.

“Why did Victor activate the old draft tonight?”

“He called me.”

“When?”

“Forty minutes ago.”

“You spoke to him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That someone accessed the spouse a document.”

Daniel nodded.

“Richard gave it to me before the blue house.”

“Where?”

“Hospital safe.”

Harris immediately signaled an agent.

“What document?”

“Original marriage rider with a handwritten cancellation.”

My pulse jumped.

“Whose handwriting?”

“Your father’s.”

The room went silent.

“Dad canceled it.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you give it to anyone?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because it also proves I knew.”

There it was.

Self-preservation.

Again.

“When did he write the cancellation?”

“Ten days before he died.”

My father had discovered the trap.

Nora opened the hospital safe under warrant.

Inside Daniel’s personal effects was a sealed plastic sleeve.

Old document.

My father’s handwritten note:

NO SPOUSAL DERIVATIVE AUTHORITY. CLAIRE’S INTEREST MUST PASS ONLY BY HER DIRECT CONSENT OR TO A VERIFIED CHILD OF MINE.

Verified child.

Rachel.

Even before publicly acknowledging her, my father protected her line.

Below it:

ANY CONTRARY AMENDMENT WAS NOT AUTHORIZED BY ME.

Signature.

Date.

If authentic, the marriage rider was void.

Samuel’s route through Daniel collapsed.

Daniel said, “Richard kept that from everyone.”

“Why give it to you?”

“He wanted leverage.”

“Against Samuel?”

“Victor.”

“Why?”

“If Victor tried to activate Rachel’s claim, Richard could reveal the cancellation and force a new legal fight.”

“Everyone used documents as guns.”

“Yes.”

Rachel asked, “Why did Richard give it to you recently?”

“He thought I could trade it.”

“For what?”

“Protection.”

“From who?”

“Samuel.”

I looked at Daniel.

“And you kept it while Samuel tried to frame me.”

“I was going to use it.”

“When?”

“If they arrested you.”

“How noble.”

“I know.”

“Stop.”

He did.

Harris asked, “Can anyone still activate spouse review.”

“Then Victor activating Rachel’s sole-heir draft—”

“May have been defensive.”

“He wanted to block Daniel before the cancellation surfaced.”

“Yes.”

Rachel looked disturbed.

“By giving me permanent control if Claire got arrested.”

“He may have intended to keep it temporary.”

Nora shook her head.

“The document does not support that.”

Victor had still crossed a line.

Again.

Protection through him.”

“Of course.”

“Where is it?”

“Evan has it.”

“How?”

“Victor gave it to him years
