couldn’t destroy it.”

“Why not give it to police?”

“Because it showed Daniel.”

My chest tightened.

“And Richard.”

“Yes.”

“And Caldwell?”

“Partly.”

“Samuel?”

“No.”

“So it made Daniel look like the murderer.”

“Yes.”

“Which protected Samuel.”

“Yes.”

Victor looked exhausted.

“I told myself preserving it was better than destroying it.”

“Where is it?”

He gave Harris a bank box number.

The recording arrived before dawn.

We watched.

I almost wished we had not.

Daniel entered the study.

Younger.

Nervous.

He poured something into the whiskey.

My father entered later.

Richard arrived.

They argued.

No audio.

Richard left.

Dad sat.

Lifted the glass.

Then stopped.

He stared at it.

Smelled it.

Set it down.

My heart pounded.

“He didn’t drink.”

Rachel leaned forward.

The video continued.

Caldwell entered.

Spoke to Dad.

Dad became angry.

Caldwell picked up the whiskey.

Poured it into the sink.

Then opened his medical bag.

My father turned toward the desk.

Caldwell moved behind him.

A syringe.

One injection into the neck.

Dad spun.

Fell.

I stopped breathing.

Daniel’s vial had not killed my father.

He never drank it.

Caldwell injected the lethal drug directly.

Samuel had known.

Richard had not.

Daniel had spent twenty years believing he might have killed my father.

But the actual murder was clearer than any of them admitted.

Caldwell.

On Samuel’s order.

Victor had preserved proof.

And hidden it.

I looked at him through the observation glass.

He had protected the truth and obstructed it at the same time.

Again.

Always.

Harris said quietly:

“This changes the homicide case.”

“Yes.”

Daniel was guilty of attempted poisoning, conspiracy-related conduct, fraud, theft, and more.

But not my father’s murder.

That distinction mattered.

Even for someone I would never take back.

Especially then.

Truth could not become revenge just because revenge felt deserved.

Rachel looked at me.

“You have to tell him.”

“I know.”

I went to Daniel’s room.

He was awake.

I placed the still image from the recording on the table.

He stared at Caldwell holding the syringe.

“What is that?”

“Dad never drank your vial.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Caldwell injected him.”

His face broke.

Not relief exactly.

Something more violent.

Twenty years of guilt suddenly rearranging itself.

“I didn’t kill him?”

“No.”

He covered his face.

I waited.

Then he whispered:

“I still tried.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“You’re not going to tell me it wasn’t my fault.”

“No.”

Good.

“I carried the vial.”

“Yes.”

“I poured it.”

“Yes.”

“I believed Richard that it wouldn’t kill him.”

“Yes.”

“I still did it.”

“Yes.”

He cried quietly.

I felt grief again.

But not confusion.

“You deserve the truth about what you did.”

He looked at me.

“And what I didn’t.”

“Yes.”

That was all.

I left.

In the hallway, morning light had begun again.

Another day.

Another truth.

But for the first time since Daniel’s midnight message, there was no major lie left between my father’s death and me.

Or so I believed.

Then Rachel’s phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She lowered the phone.

“That
