he care?”

“I don’t know.”

That was the truth.

William might have laughed and told me to take the extra money.

He was practical.

But this decision was mine.

I no longer needed to turn every choice into an instruction from a dead husband.

That realization mattered.

The settlement closed two weeks later.

Money arrived.

I transferred part into savings.

Part into an account reserved for tax and legal cleanup.

Then I did something that would have shocked Tyler.

Nothing.

No reinvestment frenzy.

No gift.

No rescue.

No dramatic purchase.

The balance simply eyebrow.

“You want to testify?”

“I want him questioned under oath.”

“Your lawyer thinks that’s wise?”

“She thinks it’s risky.”

“Then?”

Barbara looked at me.

“I spent years letting men explain documents to me.”

That sentence was new.

“I want to sit in a room while someone explains them to Grant.”

I smiled.

“That might be worth money.”

“Exactly.”

Her case reached deposition before trial.

Grant appeared by video from custody.

He looked different.

Not broken.

Just stripped of the environment that had once made him seem powerful.

No expensive office.

No private desk.

No control over who entered the room.

Barbara’s attorney began with the escrow account.

Grant claimed Barbara understood the pooled capital.”

“Did Barbara know it was pooled with Tyler’s obligations?”

“She understood relationships existed.”

Barbara watched silently.

Her attorney produced Grant’s blue ledger.

B.D. capital capture.

The phrase looked ugly even on screen.

“What does ‘capital capture’ mean?”

Grant said it was internal shorthand.

“For what?”

“Secured funds.”

“Whose objected.

The question was rephrased.

The answer remained unavoidable.

Tyler-related obligations.

Barbara did not smile.

I knew because I sat behind her.

She had invited me.

Not because she needed rescue.

Because she did not want to sit alone.

That was different.

The deposition moved to the relationship.

“Did you date Barbara Danner?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know she feared becoming financially dependent on her daughter?”

Grant’s lawyer objected.

Grant still answered.

“She discussed independence.”

“Did you use that concern to encourage her investment?”

“No.”

Messages appeared.

B.D. useful. Needs recovery story.

Grant stared at them.

His lawyer tried to contextualize.

Barbara’s attorney asked:

“Useful for what?”

Grant said nothing.

“Access?”

Silence.

“Signatures?”

His jaw tightened.

The messages already answered.

Then came the false proxy.

Grant denied instructing Barbara to impersonate William’s authority.

Ray’s source files contradicted him.

Emails contradicted him.

William’s warning letter contradicted him.

Finally Barbara’s attorney asked:

“Did William Mercer tell you directly that Barbara had no authority to represent him?”

Grant paused.

“Yes.”

Barbara inhaled beside me.

That single word did more for her than a settlement figure ever could.

William had warned him.

Grant knew.

And proceeded.

Afterward, Barbara cried in the courthouse restroom.

Not loudly.

She stood beside the sink, gripping the counter.

“I thought I’d feel better.”

“You might later.”

“He admitted it.”

“Yes.”

“So why do I still feel stupid?”

“Because his admission doesn’t change what you ignored.”

She looked at me through the mirror.

“That is a terrible comfort.”

“It isn’t comfort.”

She laughed through tears.

“God, you’re impossible.”

“So I’m told.”

Then I softened.

“You were manipulated.”

“I was greedy.”

“Both.”

“I was embarrassed.”

“Yes.”

“I signed things.”

“Yes.”

She turned.

“Can you please say one nice thing?”

I thought.

“You stopped.”

Her face changed.

I continued.

“Eventually, you stopped.”

That mattered.

For her.

For Tyler.

For me.

None of us had stopped early enough.

But eventually still counted.

Barbara settled two weeks after Grant’s deposition.

For less than her original loss after fees and recoveries.

More than nothing.

Enough to rebuild modest savings.

Her lawyer negotiated repayment from several frozen accounts and a share of recovered escrow funds.

Barbara accepted.

“No confidentiality,” she told me proudly.

“Good.”

“I learned.”

“Expensively.”

“Very.”

Meanwhile, the board approved the company’s refinancing.

Legitimate debt consolidated.

Grant-related obligations disputed or removed.

The house lien was resolved through William’s trust structure.

After accounting, the valid secured balance was far lower than Grant claimed.

Tyler and Jessica refinanced that amount through a conventional lender.

Jessica insisted on reading every page.

Twice.

The closing agent became irritated.

Jessica did not care.

I approved.

After closing, the lien held through William’s trust was released.

I signed nothing personally.

Samuel handled the trust.

Then Tyler sent me a photograph.

A stamped release.

Paid and released.

One sentence underneath:

For real this time.

I smiled.

The marriage remained uncertain.

Tyler and Jessica had moved back into the same bedroom, but Jessica kept separate financial accounts.

She attended every company-related household conversation.

Tyler did not complain.

One evening, she called me.

“Can I ask something?”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever trust William completely again after finding out he hid things?”

The question surprised me.

“He was already dead.”

“I know.”

“I had to revise my memory of him instead.”

“Was that worse?”

“Different.”

She was quiet.

“Did it make the marriage feel false?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because a marriage can contain betrayal without being entirely betrayal.”

Jessica breathed out.

“I don’t know if I can stay.”

“Then don’t decide because you think I want you to.”

“I thought you would want the family together.”

“I used to.”

“And now?”

“I want people where they can live honestly.”

She started crying.

“I still love him.”

“I know.”

“I’m furious.”

“I know.”

“I hate that he lied.”

“Yes.”

“I hate that part of me still wants this to work.”

“That isn’t weakness.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I love him too.”

Silence.

Then she laughed through tears.

“Different relationship.”

“Same problem.”

Tyler was easy to love.

Harder to trust.

That combination had shaped too many choices.

Jessica asked, “Would you stay?”

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

She went quiet.

“Why?”

“Because I am not you.”

She laughed.

“That was annoyingly careful.”

“It was honest.”

I could not give her my life as a template.

She would have to decide.

Later that night, I booked Maine.

Six days.

A small inn.

Ocean view.

No Diane.

She was offended until I promised photographs.

Tyler called the next day.

“You’re traveling alone?”

“Yes.”

“To Maine?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to.”

“Want company?”

“No.”

“That was fast.”

“You asked.”

He laughed.

Then became serious.

“Dad wanted to go.”

“Yes.”

“You okay doing that without him?”

I looked at William’s photograph.

“I don’t know.”

“You still going?”

“Yes.”

There was something important in that answer.

Courage was not confidence.

Sometimes it was buying the ticket anyway.

Before I left, Marcus sent an update on Grant’s criminal case.

Charges had expanded.

Financial fraud.

Forgery-related counts.

Extortion-related conduct under review.

False records.

The exact outcome remained uncertain.

Ray faced charges too, but cooperation would matter.

Tyler’s negotiated resolution awaited court approval.

No dramatic ending yet.

Life continued.

At the airport, Tyler called.

“Safe flight.”

“Thank you.”

“Call when you land.”

I almost agreed automatically.

Then stopped.

“No.”

“What?”

“I’ll text if I want to.”

He laughed.

“Okay.”

“You don’t need to wing.

Somewhere below were Tyler’s company.

My house.

Barbara’s apartment.

Jessica’s uncertain marriage.

Marcus’s files.

William’s grave.

Grant’s case.

All the problems I had spent months treating as if they required my presence.

The plane kept climbing
