together against him.”

“Yes.”

“And years later Richard married me.”

“Yes.”

From Victor’s perspective, the betrayal had become personal mythology.

My father ruined him.

Richard turned informant.

Then Richard married my father’s daughter.

“What does Victor want?”

Robert’s voice was quiet.

“To make Richard betray your family a second time.”

I thought of everything Richard had done.

The forged guarantees.

The fake medical records.

The surveillance.

The planned incapacity petition.

“He succeeded.”

Robert looked at me sadly.

“Yes.”

My secure phone rang.

Ortiz checked the number.

Unknown.

Another message appeared before anyone touched it.

You finally found the memorandum.

A second followed.

Now ask Robert what page is missing.

Every person in the room looked at him.

Robert went pale.

“What page?” I asked.

He did not answer.

“Robert.”

His hands began trembling.

“The memorandum was six pages.”

“And?”

“The copy I kept has five.”

“Which page is missing?”

“The fourth.”

“What was on page four?”

Robert looked at Ortiz.

Then Martin.

Then me.

“A list.”

“What list?”

“People your father believed Victor had compromised.”

My throat tightened.

“Who was on it?”

“I remember some.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

Robert swallowed.

“Caroline Mercer’s father.”

Martin stiffened.

“Evan Mercer?”

“His father too.”

“Melissa?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Robert closed his eyes.

“There was one name I never understood.”

“What name?”

He opened them.

“Graham Vale.”

The investigator Victor later recommended to Richard.

The man who had followed me.

His name had been connected to Victor since 2009.

Richard had not hired a stranger who happened to work for Victor.

He had hired someone my father identified seventeen years earlier.

And the page proving it had disappeared.

Ortiz asked the obvious question.

“Who had access to Robert’s copy?”

Robert’s answer changed everything again.

“Until three months ago, only me.”

“And three months ago?”

“Richard asked to see it.”

The room went silent.

“Did you show him?”

“Yes.”

“Was page four present then?”

Robert’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

Three months ago, Richard had held the complete memorandum.

Now the page naming Graham Vale was gone.

I stared at Robert.

Then at Martin.

Richard had claimed he did not know Graham’s deeper connection to Victor.

That claim had just become almost impossible to believe.

And for the first time, I wondered whether Richard’s confession was not a confession at all.

Maybe it was simply the newest version of the story he thought we could prove.

<a
