David.

Impossible.

Richard was younger then.

David too.

But the timeline did not make sense.

“How old did Richard look?”

“Maybe twenty.”

That put the photo in the mid-1990s.

Long before the 2009 audit.

Long before Victor.

Long before Richard claimed to have any connection to my appeared on a monitor.

Faded.

Taken outdoors.

My mother stood in the center, smiling.

David Mercer stood several feet behind her.

Younger.

Thin.

Thomas Mercer beside him.

And at the far edge, half turned toward the camera—

Richard.

Young enough that I almost doubted myself.

But it was him.

The handwritten date on the back had been photographed too.

August 1996.

I was twenty-one.

My mother was still alive.

Richard had told me he first encountered my family through Victor in 2009.

Another lie.

Thirteen years erased.

I stared at my mother’s face.

“What was happening in 1996?”

Martin whispered, “We need to find out.”

I already knew one thing.

Whatever began this story did not start died.

And the man I married had been there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: A Photograph From 1996
