tried.”

That aligned with Graham’s preparedness.

Not exoneration.

But detail.

“What do you want now?”

Victor’s voice softened.

“To know whether Leonard died knowing Anne forgave him.”

I looked at the letter.

“She didn’t use the word forgive.”

Silence.

“She said he wasn’t responsible for what he didn’t authorize.”

I heard Victor breathe.

“She believed Thomas deceived both of them.”

Another silence.

Then something changed in his voice.

A small collapse.

“My father never told me.”

“Maybe because he wanted it finished.”

“He should have told me.”

I almost laughed at the irony.

“Yes.”

Victor understood too.

Every generation hiding truth to protect the next.

Every silence creating the next disaster.

“Where are you?” I asked again.

This time he answered.

“Outside Eleanor’s old house.”

Ortiz moved instantly.

Teams converged.

Victor continued.

“I could go in.”

“No.”

“She’s not there.”

He knew.

Probably surveillance.

“Then what are you doing?”

“Looking at where people keep ghosts.”

My skin prickled.

“Victor, stay where you are.”

He laughed.

“Now you sound like law enforcement.”

“Good.”

Then his voice changed.

“No more running.”

Ortiz froze.

“What did you say?” I asked.

“I’m tired.”

Those words can mean too many things.

“Put your hands where officers can see them.”

A pause.

Then:

“Tell Eleanor I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“Making her afraid.”

Sirens faintly appeared through the line.

Victor whispered:

“And tell Richard I was right about one thing.”

“What?”

“He was always going to destroy himself.”

The line disconnected.

Ortiz’s radio erupted.

Agents found him standing beside the road near Eleanor’s property.

Unarmed.

Hands visible.

No resistance.

No chase.

No last trick.

Victor Lane surrendered.

I sat motionless.

After weeks of fear, the end of his flight was almost disappointingly quiet.

No confrontation.

No weapon.

No speech.

Just an old man on a dark road finally running out of places to carry his anger.

Martin exhaled.

“It’s over.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He understood.

Victor was captured.

That was not the same thing as over.

Too many consequences remained.

Too many people still had to answer.

Too many parts of my life had to be rebuilt without the structures that nearly consumed it.

But for the first time since the glass shattered, the most dangerous man in the story no longer controlled the next move.

<a
