said cruel things and apologized later.

Leo deserved his mother, not a saint.

The next morning Laura called with news about Room 214.

The hospital’s old scheduling records had been preserved on microfilm.

A meeting was booked there the day Sarah referenced.

Attendees were listed only by initials.

AB.

TM.

And meeting.

“Did she sign anything?”

“We’re looking.”

The answer came two days later.

Yes.

There was a consent form.

Or rather, there was a copy of one.

Sarah’s signature appeared at the bottom.

I knew immediately it was wrong.

Not dramatically wrong.

That was what made it frightening.

Whoever signed it understood her handwriting.

The S curled almost correctly.

But Sarah always connected the final h in her first name to the beginning of her last.

This signature did not.

Daniel saw it too.

“She didn’t sign that.”

Laura agreed it should be examined professionally.

Then she showed us the date.

The form had been notarized the morning Daniel was still unconscious.

Witnessed by Adrian Bell.

I stared at his signature.

Again.

Always nearby.

Always legitimizing paper Sarah had apparently never agreed to.

“What did the form do?”

Laura explained that it purported to authorize placement of the unborn child with an adoption agency after delivery.

“Which agency?”

“Hearthstone Family Services.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Laura’s expression suggested that was about to change.

“Hearthstone closed seven years ago.”

“Can we still find records?”

“Maybe.”

Daniel leaned toward her laptop.

“Who ran it?”

Laura turned the screen.

The executive director at the time was a woman named Margaret Vale.

Daniel went pale.

“You know her.”

He nodded.

“She was my father’s cousin.”

The room fell silent.

Thomas had not simply pressured Sarah.

He had arranged a private consultation with his doctor friend and an adoption agency run by his own relative.

He had built a path for Leo to disappear before Leo was even born.

Laura continued searching.

Hearthstone’s old registration filings listed donors.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Mercer Development Group.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“My father funded them.”

“Yes.”

I stood and walked to the window.

Cars passed below.

People carried coffee.

A delivery truck double-parked.

The world went on being ordinary while my understanding of the past changed completely.

Then Laura received an email.

Hospital archives had located a scanned obstetric intake document from the night Sarah arrived in labor.

On it, beside a question about planned custody arrangements, someone had checked a box.

Adoption pending.

Sarah’s initials appeared beside the notation.

Except they were not Sarah’s initials.

I knew her handwriting.

These were block letters.

Careful.

Impersonal.

SG.

Laura enlarged the image.

Below the box was another line.

Family contact restricted per patient request.

That was the instruction staff had followed.

The reason they kept me out.

The reason Marianne had been told I left.

A forged document had turned my own daughter’s hospital room into a place I was not permitted to enter.

Daniel spoke first.

“Who completed the intake?”

Laura scrolled down.

The admitting nurse’s name was there.

But beneath it, authorizing physician:

Adrian Bell.

I stared at those two words.

Then Laura said, “There’s one more problem.”

She pointed to the timestamp.

The adoption notation was entered forty-two minutes before Sarah arrived at the hospital.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Timestamp Proved Someone Prepared Sarah’s Hospital Record in
