An attempt. Maybe leverage.”

The petition alleged Sarah lacked the maturity and financial means to provide adequate care.

It described Daniel as incapacitated.

It proposed a temporary guardian.

Thomas Mercer.

Of course.

Not the adoptive family.

Not the agency.

Thomas himself.

The adoption had been one agreed placement.

Agreed.

That word again.

Agreement manufactured on paper where none existed in reality.

Then we found an affidavit.

Signed by Ruth.

My sister had declared that I was overwhelmed, angry, and financially incapable of taking on an infant.

The date was the morning Sarah went into labor.

I stared at Ruth’s signature.

“She signed this before Sarah died.”

Daniel nodded.

That meant Ruth’s betrayal went farther than she had confessed even after the tape once Ruth realized the scope of potential liability, she stopped communicating directly.

My anger had nowhere to go.

So I read the affidavit again.

It described me as emotionally unstable following Sarah’s pregnancy.

I remembered making pancakes.

Driving Sarah to appointments.

Putting aside money for a crib.

Working extra ammunition.

Daniel turned another page.

There was a draft affidavit from Adrian Bell.

He declared Sarah had expressed uncertainty about parenting.

Bell had already admitted she explicitly refused adoption.

The contradiction was obvious.

“What about the judge?” I asked.

Near the back was a memo from Thomas to an attorney.

Initials only.

RC.

The memo discussed possible emergency filing before Judge Harold Keene.

Daniel recognized the the relationship existed.

Laura contacted Keene through counsel.

He declined comment.

The refusal told us nothing.

Still, it irritated me.

I had grown
