29 – Michael Came Home to Meet Leo, but Sarah’s Final Note Forced Him to Answer the Question He Had Avoided for Fifteen Years

Michael arrived two days later.

He did not call from the road.

Did not ask whether I had changed my mind.

Did not give himself another opening to disappear.

At 4:17 in the afternoon, a faded blue sedan pulled into my driveway and stopped beside the maple tree.

Leo was upstairs.

Daniel stood near the kitchen window.

I was at the sink pretending to wash a mug that had already been clean.

Michael remained in the car for almost a minute.

Then he opened the door.

He had brought one duffel bag.

Nothing else.

No gifts.

No flowers.

No attempt to soften the moment with objects.

I appreciated that.

He walked up the path slowly.

Not because he was afraid of me.

Because his heart condition had apparently made steep walks harder.

That detail annoyed me immediately.

Even now, some part of me wanted him physically strong enough to absorb everything I needed to say.

He stopped on the porch.

The wind chime Sarah had bought at twelve clicked above us.

Michael looked up.

His face changed.

“You kept it.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Then I opened the door.

Daniel was waiting in the living room.

Michael entered.

Neither man spoke.

They were family by blood and strangers by every practical measure.

Daniel finally said, “You look different.”

Michael almost smiled.

“So do you.”

“Ten years.”

“More.”

The silence returned.

Then footsteps sounded upstairs.

Leo.

Michael turned toward the staircase.

I had warned him.

Do not touch Leo unless Leo chooses it.

Do not call yourself Grandpa unless Leo does.

Do not apologize so much that the child ends up comforting you.

Do not explain adult failures as though a ten-year-old owes you understanding.

Michael agreed to every condition.

Now none of those rules mattered as much as the actual boy descending the stairs.

Leo stopped halfway down.

Michael looked at him.

His lips parted.

He did not speak.

Leo continued slowly.

He reached the bottom.

For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.

Then Leo said, “You’re shorter than I thought.”

Daniel turned away to hide a smile.

Michael blinked.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you.”

“I didn’t say disappointed.”

Leo came closer.

Michael’s hands remained at his sides.

Good.

Leo studied his face.

“You have Mom’s nose.”

Michael shut his eyes for half a second.

“Yes.”

“Grandma says I have her laugh.”

“You do.”

“You heard me laugh?”

Michael realized his mistake.

Leo realized it too.

“You were watching.”

“Yes.”

“From far away.”

“Yes.”

“That was creepy.”

“It was.”

I nearly intervened.

Then decided not to.

Michael deserved the conversation Leo chose to have.

“Why didn’t you come over?”

Michael looked at me once.

Then back at Leo.

“I was afraid.”

“Of Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“And Grandma?”

“Yes.”

Leo frowned.

“Grandma’s not scary.”

Daniel coughed.

I looked at him.

He looked away.

Michael said, “She can be when she needs to be.”

Leo accepted that.

“Were you scared of me?”

Michael took longer.

“Yes.”

That surprised him.

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t know what you would think of me.”

Leo stared.

“So you made me decide without meeting you.”

Michael’s face changed.

“That’s what I wrote.”

“You read my notebook?”

“Yes.”

“You’re mad.”

“No.”

“Good.”

Michael nodded.

“You were right.”

Leo sighed.

“Everybody keeps saying I’m right after doing dumb stuff.”

Nobody had a response to that.

He sat on the couch.

Michael remained standing until Leo said, “You can sit.”

He did.

There was a distance of three cushions between them.

Leo asked about the marine yard.

Michael explained boat engines.

Leo asked whether he could fix cars.

“Some.”

“Daniel says he can.”

Daniel looked offended.

“I can.”

“You watched a video to change a battery.”

“That counts.”

Michael laughed.

The laugh stopped me.

Not because it sounded like Sarah.

Because Sarah had laughed like him.

I had spent years thinking certain pieces of her appeared from nowhere.

Now one of them sat in my living room.

The afternoon continued awkwardly.

That was good.

I did not want instant healing.

Instant healing is another kind of lie.

Michael drank coffee.

Leo showed him the baseball glove Daniel had been using.

Michael examined it like an artifact.

They talked about pitchers.

Engines.

School.

Nothing important.

Everything important.

Then Leo asked the question.

“Why did you leave Mom?”

The room changed.

Michael put the glove down.

“I was ashamed.”

“That’s not why.”

Michael nodded.

“You’re right. That’s part of why.”

Leo waited.

“I had debts. I made bad choices. Thomas used those choices to scare me. He paid money I owed and made me promise to stay away.”

“Could he really make you?”

“No.”

That answer mattered.

“He made it hard,” Michael continued. “But I still chose to go.”

Leo looked at me.

Then back at him.

“So Grandma didn’t make you leave.”

“No.”

“Mom didn’t.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“Yes.”

Michael did not say Thomas forced me.

Did not say I thought it was best.

Did not turn choice into fate.

“Yes.”

Leo leaned back.

“That was mean.”

Michael nodded.

“It was.”

“You missed her whole life after that.”

“Yes.”

“She died without you there.”

Michael’s face crumpled.

“Yes.”

Leo looked uncomfortable then.

Not because he regretted the words.

Because he saw their effect.

I almost stepped in.

Michael spoke first.

“You don’t need to make me feel better.”

Good.

Leo nodded.

“Okay.”

Another silence.

Then Leo asked, “Do you want to see her room?”

I turned sharply.

Sarah’s room had changed over the years.

Not preserved like a shrine.

Leo used part of it for storage.

But several of Sarah’s things remained.

Michael looked at me.

I let Leo decide.

“If you want.”

Leo stood.

“Come on.”

They went upstairs.

Daniel stayed behind.

He looked at me.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

We sat at the kitchen table.

Through the ceiling, I heard Leo talking.

Michael’s footsteps.

A drawer opening.

Then silence.

Long silence.

Daniel said, “Do you trust him?”

“No.”

“Do you think you will?”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

“That’s fair.”

I looked at him.

“How about you?”

“With him?”

“Yes.”

Daniel thought.

“I don’t trust anyone who disappears for fifteen years because they’re scared of a conversation.”

“That’s a very specific rule.”

“I’ve had a weird month.”

That earned a smile.

Then Laura called.

The state investigators had obtained additional records from Cole.

One item involved Sarah’s missing phone.

My body tightened.

“Who had it?”

“We’re not sure yet.”

Cole’s archived billing notes showed that the night Sarah died, Thomas instructed Curtis Blackwell to obtain “SG device hospital property records.

“Thomas took it.”

“Probably through Blackwell.”

“Where is it?”

“We don’t know.”

Then Laura told me something else.

One of Cole’s notes referenced “copy to RC safe.”

Richard Cole may have preserved a copy of the phone’s data.

“Can we get it?”

Investigators were seeking it.

If it existed, it could contain the photograph of Thomas’s note Michael remembered.

Maybe other things.

I hung up.

Michael and Leo came downstairs twenty minutes later.

Michael had been crying.

Leo had not.

That felt correct.

Michael held a small object.

Sarah’s old keychain.

A plastic red fish.

“I gave her this.”

“I know.”

“She kept it?”

“Yes.”

He returned it to Leo.

“No,” Leo said. “You can hold it.”

Michael froze.

“For now.”

He closed his hand around it.

“Thank you.”

Leo went to the kitchen for juice.

Michael waited until he was out of earshot.

“He showed me the photo of Sarah at the lake.”

“Marianne’s copy?”

“Yes.”

“He asked whether she knew she was pregnant then.”

“Did than some of the terrible ones.

Then I took Sarah’s final note from the drawer.

Michael recognized her handwriting.

He stood.

“Sit.”

He did.

I handed it to him.

He read.

By the final line, his hands were shaking.

Please find my dad.
