son?”

“Yes.”

“Then listen.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“Go back to sleep.”

“You called me.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying that.”

He laughed again.

Good.

The trust dispute expanded quickly.

William Mercer’s original estate documents had to be reconstructed.

Old attorneys were contacted.

Probate archives reopened.

Handwritten letters from William to Anna Grant supported Michael’s paternity.

One letter referred to “our boy.”

Another promised financial protection.

A trust amendment set aside a twenty-percent interest in certain holdings for Anna’s descendants if Michael’s relationship to William was ever established.

Thomas had treated that clause as nonexistent.

He moved assets.

Refinanced properties.

Used them as collateral.

Built Mercer Development into something much larger.

Unwinding it would be complicated.

Laura brought in trust counsel named Samuel Price.

Samuel spoke more slowly than anyone I had met.

It irritated me for the first hour.

Then I realized he was precise.

He explained that Leo was not automatically about to receive a fortune.

Claims had to be proven.

Statutes argued.

Tracing established.

Michael’s paternity legally recognized.

Sarah’s place in the line confirmed.

Then Leo’s.

“What about Daniel?”

“He inherited from Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“Does he lose that.”

Fair.

Daniel voluntarily provided estate documents.

That surprised Thomas’s old company attorneys.

One warned him privately not to cooperate beyond legal requirements.

Daniel told him to resign.

The attorney did.

Then two members of Mercer Development’s board requested a meeting.

They feared the trust investigation could destabilize the company.

Jobs.

Loans.

Properties.

Employees who had nothing to do with Thomas.

That mattered.

I did not want Leo’s justice to become someone else’s needless disaster.

Daniel understood.

He invited Laura, Samuel, and me.

I almost refused.

I knew nothing about corporate restructuring.

Samuel said, “You know why we’re here.”

So I went.

The meeting happened on the top floor of Mercer Development’s headquarters.

Glass walls.

City view.

The kind of office Thomas probably loved.

His portrait still hung outside the boardroom.

Daniel stopped in front of it.

Then asked an employee to remove it.

Not destroy.

Just remove.

That distinction mattered.

Inside, twelve people waited.

Executives.

Board members.

Lawyers.

Most looked at me as though I had wandered into the wrong building.

Daniel began.

“My father used this company to conceal family trust assets and finance conduct that harmed Sarah Grant and her family.”

No euphemism.

One board member interrupted.

“Allegedly.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Fine. wall had been rebuilt.

Marcus used a stud finder.

Then a small scope.

Empty space.

The panel came off.

Behind it was a steel St. Agnes correspondence.

The second, William Mercer trust originals.

The third, surveillance.

The fourth, hospital records.

The fifth contained something different.

Personal letters.

From Thomas.

To William.

To Anna.

To Michael.

To Daniel.

Never sent.

And one addressed to Sarah.

Written three weeks before she died.

I stared at the envelope.

Thomas had written my daughter’s name himself.

No postage.

No indication she ever saw it.

Daniel looked at me.

“Open it.”

I did.

Thomas began:

Sarah,

You think I dislike you because of your father.

That is not entirely wrong.

I read faster.

Then stopped.

Thomas admitted Michael was his brother.

Admitted William had treated them differently.

Admitted he believed Michael had no right to Mercer wealth because Michael “never carried the burden of the family name.”

The resentment was naked.

Then Thomas wrote:

You and letter.

We did not know which.

At the bottom Thomas wrote:

If you force this into the open, none of us will come through unchanged.

He was right.

What he misunderstood was that keeping it closed caused the damage.

Then Daniel opened the sixth box.

Inside were financial ledgers.

One account stood out.

Payments from Mercer Development to Richard Cole, Blackwell, Bell’s consulting firm, Hearthstone—

and Ruth.

Not twenty-seven thousand.

Not thirty-two thousand.

Over fifteen years:

$184,000.

My hands went numb.

Ruth had lied about the money too.

Again.

This had never been a few frightened payments.

Thomas had
