changed.

“Anything else?”

“When you were sick once.”

“The flu?”

“Yes.”

“Why did he care?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he ask if I was okay?”

Ruth hesitated.

That hesitation mattered.

“Yes.”

Leo stared.

Thomas had asked.

Not enough.

Not remotely.

Still true.

“What did you say?”

“That you were fine.”

“Was he happy?”

“He said good.”

Leo leaned back.

I watched him place one more complicated piece into Thomas.

Not monster.

Not loving grandfather.

A man capable of concern while continuing surveillance and control.

Human beings are inconvenient that way.

Leo asked, “Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

“While doing that?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

Then back at Ruth.

“That still doesn’t make sense.”

Ruth whispered, “I know.”

He frowned.

“Stop saying that.”

I almost laughed.

Daniel’s phrase had infected everyone.

Ruth actually smiled.

Small.

Sad.

“Okay.”

Then Leo asked the question I feared most.

“Are you still my grandma?”

Ruth froze.

I did not breathe.

“That’s up to you.”

Leo thought.

“No.”

Ruth’s face broke.

He continued before I could react.

“Not right now.”

Ruth nodded.

Tears fell.

“Okay.”

“You’re Grandma Ruth because that’s won’t.”

Leo sat straighter.

“If I want to talk again, Grandma will tell you.”

“Yes.”

That was it.

Not reconciliation.

Boundary.

I felt prouder of him than I wanted to show.

He stood.

Ruth stood too.

She did not reach for him.

Good.

Then Leo surprised us.

“Mom’s birthday was last month.”

Ruth nodded.

“I know.”

“We took daisies.”

“She liked shrugged.

“Okay.”

Then he left.

I stayed behind for one minute.

Ruth wiped her face.

“Thank
