knows why Charles chose Anna.”

My sister.

“For Charles Jr.?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“It wasn’t only to keep Anna inside the family.”

“What else?”

“Charles believed Anna knew where Evelyn hid Elaine’s copy of the child ledger.”

“She was a enough.

But Walter had not finished.

“Charles also wanted Anna because of blood.”

My stomach tightened.

“What blood?”

“He believed Evelyn’s first child belonged to Leon.”

We already knew Anna’s biological father had never been established clearly.

“What?”

Walter’s voice lowered.

“Anna may have been Leon Mercer’s daughter.”

Anna was not present.

I was grateful.

“But Mother’s one Susan took.

“So Susan learned.”

“Yes.”

“What was the result?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you believe that?”

“Yes.”

Another identity question.

Another paternity test.

But this one mattered differently.

Not because Leon could become a father emotionally.

Because it could explain why Charles monitored Anna so aggressively.

If Anna was Leon’s biological daughter, she represented inheritance, leverage, legitimacy within Mercer’s network.

Then Russell asked:

“What about Caleb?”

Caleb’s paternity to Leon was confirmed through records.

Walter answered:

“Caleb was Leon’s son.”

“Then if Anna was Leon’s daughter—”

“They would be half siblings.”

Close in age.

Raised separately.

Both manipulated.

I took a breath.

“Where could Susan verify Anna’s test?”

Walter said:

“Nora.”

Of course.

Nora had copied the original records.

Susan went to her mother.

Then Memphis.

Then vanished with Rebecca.

Security camera footage from Memphis Central.

Susan and Nora leaving the station after placing items in locker 214.

They were not alone.

A third person walked beside them.

An elderly woman.

Rebecca sent a still.

Daniel looked first.

His face changed.

“No.”

“Who?”

He
