me.

Mother harmed me.

Fear mattered.

Choice mattered too.

Eventually Anna straightened.

“She knew where I was.”

“Yes.”

“I thought that would make me angrier.”

“Does it?”

“Yes.”

She laughed through tears.

“Also less empty.”

I understood.

Being abandoned intentionally and being watched from afar were both painful.

But different pains.

“You don’t have to forgive her.”

“I know.”

“Do you want to?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s allowed.”

She smiled.

“Robert’s lesson again.”

“Yes.”

An investigator entered after we finished.

They had news.

Not historical.

Current.

Richard Vale’s old federal archive contained one surviving memo never entered into Riverglass.

Dated 1982.

It described Leon Mercer’s death in custody.

Natural complications from his gunshot wound and untreated infection.

Not murder.

Not Harlan.

Not Paul.

Leon died because damage accumulated and care came too late.

Another dramatic mystery reduced to a human failure.

But attached to the memo was a handwritten note.

Before death, Leon requested one person.

Not Caleb.

Not Evelyn.

Not Daniel.

Not Harlan.

Robert Turner.

My father went.

No one had known.

“What did they discuss?”

The memo gave only one line.

MERCER PROVIDED LOCATION OF FINAL CASH RESERVE TO TURNER IN EXCHANGE FOR PROMISE REGARDING E.C.

E.C.

Elaine Carter?

Evelyn Carter?

Both possible.

“What promise?”

Nobody knew.

But investigators found a second note.

TURNER REFUSED MONEY.

PROMISE ACCEPTED.

Russell looked at me.

“What would Leon ask your father to promise about Elaine?”

Caleb had returned for the last portion of the tape.

He looked suddenly pale.

“Not Elaine.”

“What?”

He stared at the initials.

“E.C. could be me.”

I frowned.

“Caleb?”

“My birth name.”

Caleb Carter.

C.C.

Not E.C.

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then?”

He looked toward Anna.

“Elaine’s child.”

The phrase.

E.C.

Elaine’s child.

Maybe shorthand, not initials.

“What promise?”

Caleb whispered:

“To never tell me Leon was my father.”

My father had apparently kept that promise too.

Another choice made for someone else.

But why would Leon, dying, want his own son not to know him?

The answer waited somewhere in the final Riverglass record.

And for the first time, Caleb was the one who had to decide whether he wanted it.
