debts.”

Then:

“If Danny comes for the house, it is Hale.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Robert had predicted the exact shape.

The house.

Daniel.

Curtis.

Not because he knew every detail.

Because he understood the incentives.

“Where is that notebook?”

Ortiz said, “We are searching.”

Daniel was questioned.

He remembered a green notebook.

He claimed Curtis took it.

“When?”

“The night of the study break-in.”

Daniel said he found it inside the lower compartment after forcing the latch.

He read only the first pages.

Then called Curtis.

Curtis arrived later.

Took the notebook.

“What did Daniel see?”

Ortiz played his answer.

“Dad wrote that I was weak.”

I almost smiled sadly.

“Exact words?”

“He wrote, ‘Danny mistakes relief for rescue.’”

That sounded like Robert.

Daniel continued.

“He wrote that Curtis would offer me a way out and I’d take it.”

The investigator asked:

“Did that make you stop?”

Daniel cried.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Curtis was already offering me a way out.”

The tragedy of prophecy.

Being warned and recognizing yourself in the warning, then continuing anyway.

“What else did Robert write?”

Daniel hesitated.

“One line about Mom.”

“What?”

“He said, ‘Ellie will survive this if we don’t make her doubt herself.’”

I stopped the recording.

My throat closed.

That was why Curtis’s strategy was so cruel.

He knew Robert’s fear.

Then built a case designed precisely to make me doubt my own mind.

I asked Ortiz, “Does Curtis still have the notebook?”

“He denies it.”

“Search warrant?”

“Already covered relevant locations.”

“No notebook.”

“Then where?”

Unknown.

But Daniel remembered something else.

When Curtis took it, he placed it inside a red legal file marked VANCE — PERSONAL.

Investigators had seen references to that file in Curtis’s document index.

The file itself was missing.

Last recorded location:

Hale Property’s off-site archive.

The archive Curtis claimed had suffered a water leak eight months earlier.

Ortiz’s investigators had accepted that explanation initially because insurance records documented damage.

Now they examined the claim again.

The leak was real.

But photographs showed damage only in one storage section.

VANCE — PERSONAL had been stored in another.

Curtis lied.

Again.

By evening, investigators had a new warrant.

The storage company provided access logs.

Curtis had entered the archive the morning after my guardianship hearing.

He removed one banker’s box.

No record of return.

Security footage showed him carrying it to his car.

“Where did he go?”

Cell data traced him.

Not home.

Not his office.

To a private bank.

I stared at Ortiz.

“Safe-deposit box.”

“Likely.”

The bank confirmed Curtis held one.

Investigators moved to preserve it.

Curtis’s attorney objected.

Lost.

The box was opened under warrant.

Inside were cash, passports, encrypted storage devices, property records—

and a red file.

VANCE — PERSONAL.

Inside it lay Robert’s green notebook.

I did not touch it when Ortiz brought it into the evidence room.

Not yet.

She opened to the final written page.

Robert’s handwriting had deteriorated.

But it was legible.

Ellie,

If you are reading this, then I waited too long again.

I felt my breath catch.

The next line was worse.

There is one thing about Daniel I never told you because I was afraid it would be the thing you could not forgive me for hiding.

I stared at the page.

After everything, Robert still had one final secret.

Click here to continue reading: PART 35:
