to see me.

Not by letter.

Through Rebecca.

He was serving his sentence at a federal facility several hours away under an arrangement coordinated with the broader case.

The details did not interest me.

Prison had its own bureaucracy.

I did not need to learn it unless I chose to.

Rebecca called on a Wednesday morning.

“Daniel has completed the communication program required before requesting family contact.”

“That sounds institutional.”

“It reason.”

“It may be the only one.”

I looked out the kitchen window.

Spring had arrived.

The maple near the driveway showed green at the something.”

Rebecca laughed softly.

“That is fair.”

“What does he hope?”

“He told me he hopes you’ll come, and understands if you me.

For three days, I moved around the question.

Not avoiding it.

Letting it exist.

Would a visit reward him?

That was the old framework.

Would refusing punish him?

Also old.

Neither question helped.

The real one was simpler.

Did I want to see my son?

The answer was yes.

That frightened me.

I had become comfortable with controlled distance.

Letters screened through counsel.

Updates through Rebecca.

No surprises.

A visit would make him real agreed.

No one knew where I was going.

That felt oddly peaceful.

The facility looked exactly like government architecture usually looks when designed to prevent pleasure.

Gray.

Low.

Functional.

Security took time.

Shoes.

Identification.

Metal detector.

Rules.

Then a visiting room.

Plastic chairs.

Vending machines.

Families talking too loudly because privacy was impossible anyway.

Daniel entered.

He looked older.

More than six months older.

Hair cut short.

Plain clothing.

Thinner.

He stopped several feet away.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hello, Daniel.”

He waited.

I realized he was asking silently whether a hug was allowed.

I did not offer one.

Not yet.

We sat.

For several minutes we talked about nothing.

Weather.

Ruth.

Food.

He complained prison coffee was terrible.

“Consequences.”

He laughed.

A real laugh.

Then stopped, uncertain whether laughter was permitted.

“It’s okay,” I said.

He nodded.

Silence.

Finally:

“I don’t know what to say.”

“That is new.”

He smiled faintly.

“I deserved that.”

“Probably.”

He looked down.

“I’m working.”

“I know.”

Rebecca had sent limited updates.

Financial ethics program.

Therapy.

Restitution almost smiled.

He became serious.

“I’ve read Dad’s notebook.”

I looked at him.

“How?”

“Rebecca got approved copies of relevant family portions.”

“Why?”

“I asked.”

“What did you think?”

Daniel took a long breath.

“That he loved me badly sometimes.”

I considered.

“Yes.”

“And I used it.”

“Yes.”

“He kept thinking one more rescue would be the last.”

“Yes.”

“I kept thinking one more lie would buy enough time to fix everything.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I see how similar we were.”

“That would have upset him.”

“It upsets me.”

Good.

He continued.

“I also see how much I blamed him for choices I made after he was gone.”

I said nothing.

“I hated that he kept rescuing me.”

“Yes.”

“But every time he stopped, I begged him to start again.”

“Yes.”

He laughed sadly.

“That’s hard to admit.”

“Good.”

He looked at me.

“You still do that.”

“What?”

“Say good when something hurts.”

“It means you’re touching reality.”

He nodded.

We sat quietly.

Then he asked, “Did you ever think about visiting before I asked?”

“No.”

The truth hurt him.

I saw it.

I did not repair it.

“Okay.”

“I thought about you.”

“That’s different.”

“Yes.”

He understood.

“Are you selling the house?”

“No.”

“Will you?”

“Maybe.”

He nodded.

“You’d tell me?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He flinched.

Then nodded again.

“That’s fair.”

Important.

Old Daniel would have turned the boundary into rejection.

This Daniel simply accepted.

Or practiced accepting.

Either way, useful.

“What about Vanessa?”

He asked carefully.

“She wrote once.”

“Do you hate her?”

“No.”

“Forgive her?”

“Some things.”

He looked down.

“She filed the divorce.”

“I know.”

“I signed.”

“I know.”

“No fight.”

“That was wise.”

“I thought about fighting.”

“I assumed.”

He gave a small laugh.

“Then I realized I wanted her to stay married to me because losing her made me feel like the punishment was becoming too real.”

That was painfully honest.

“So you signed.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He smiled.

“There it is again.”

“Get used to it.”

He looked around the room.

“I probably have time.”

The joke startled both of us.

Then we laughed.

For a few seconds, we sounded like mother and son before all this.

That hurt more than sadness.

Because ordinary closeness was still possible in fragments.

Then Daniel became quiet.

“Can I ask you something?”

“You can ask.”

“Do you love me?”

There it was.

The question beneath years of fear.

The question Robert tried to answer with money.

The question Daniel tried to control through lies.

I answered without delay.

“Yes.”

His face broke.

He turned away.

Pressed one hand against his mouth.

I waited.

When he looked back, his eyes were wet.

“Why?”

“That is not a useful question.”

“It is to me.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“Love is not payment for good behavior.”

He stared.

“It also is not permission.”

He nodded slowly.

“I can love you and still not trust you.”

“Yes.”

“I can love you and not give you access to my finances.”

A sad smile.

“Definitely.”

“I can love you and not let you live in my house.”

“Yes.”

“I can love you and believe your sentence is appropriate.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“I can love you and never return to the relationship we had.”

That one hurt most.

He breathed carefully.

“Yes.”

“Do you understand?”

“I’m trying.”

“That is enough for today.”

He nodded.

After a while, he asked, “Were you ever proud of me?”

The old question.

Maybe the original wound.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Many times.”

He looked surprised.

“Why didn’t I know?”

“I told you.”

“Not in the way I heard.”

That was fair.

I thought.

“You were kind to Robert when he was sick.”

Daniel looked away.

“You stayed up with him.”

“Yes.”

“You used to help neighbors without telling anyone.”

He nodded.

“You were excellent at seeing possibilities in old buildings.”

A small smile.

“I still miss that.”

“You made people laugh.”

He cried again.

I continued.

“You also lied.”

“Yes.”

“Stole.”

“Yes.”

“Manipulated.”

“Yes.”

“Hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“One set does not erase the other.”

He whispered, “I always thought it did.”

“That was part of your problem.”

He nodded.

Maybe part of mine too.

I had a tendency toward verdicts.

Capable.

Incapable.

Responsible.

Irresponsible.

Useful categories professionally.

Poor substitutes for people.

The guard announced ten minutes.

Daniel looked panicked for a second.

Then caught himself.

Old reflex.

Time ending meant grasp.

Now he breathed.

“Can I write?”

“Yes.”

“Directly?”

I considered.

“Yes.”

His eyes widened.

“One letter a month.”

“Okay.”

“No demands for reply.”

“Okay.”

“No legal updates unless I ask.”

“Okay.”

“No asking Ruth to lobby me.”

He almost smiled.

“Definitely.”

“If you lie, contact stops.”

His face sobered.

“Understood.”

The guard called again.

Daniel stood.

So did I.

He waited.

This time I opened my arms.

He stepped into them slowly.

My son.

Larger than me.

Thin now.

His body shook.

I held him.

Not long.

Long enough.

Then I stepped back first.

His face collapsed again.

But he did not reach.

Good.

“Goodbye, Daniel.”

“Bye, Mom.”

I left.

The drive home felt longer.

At a rest stop, I sat in the car and cried again.

Not because visiting was wrong.

Because love resumed weight once it had a body.

Distance had made it abstract.

Now it lived in his shoulders.

His voice.

His attempt not to ask for more.

I drove on.

When I got home, the house was quiet.

I unlocked the door.

Turned on the hall light.

My choice.

I entered Robert’s study.

Not because I needed evidence.

Because I wanted to talk to him.

“You would have visited sooner,” I said aloud.

Silence.

“And that was part of the problem.”

I smiled.

Then sat in his chair.

“I waited until I wanted to.”

That mattered.

Nothing answered.

Good.

The dead had done enough advising.

Weeks passed.

Daniel wrote one letter.

Three pages.

Mostly about books.

He had read a biography of Eisenhower and complained the
