nodded.

“At home.”

“You never deleted them?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Robert died.”

The answer carried its own logic.

Fear preserves what courage sometimes does not.

We returned to my house with an evidence team that afternoon.

The basement looked different when strangers searched it.

Every box became potential history.

Every object acquired a reason to exist.

I found the camcorder myself.

It was inside a plastic storage tote marked CHRISTMAS VIDEOS.

Black.

Smaller than I remembered.

The battery had long since died.

Cho photographed it before anyone touched the seams.

The technician examined the casing.

“There’s a loose panel.”

My heart began to pound.

The battery compartment came off.

Nothing.

The memory-card slot was empty.

Then the technician removed a narrow decorative side panel.

Inside was a tiny wrapped object.

A flash drive.

Not a hard drive.

Samuel had remembered the category, not the size.

The technician did not plug it in.

He bagged it.

Chain of custody.

Imaging.

Digital forensics.

I understood the procedure.

I hated the waiting anyway.

The anonymous messages continued that evening.

One arrived at 8:06.

YOU FOUND IT.

I showed Cho.

“Do not answer.”

At 8:17:

ROBERT DIDN’T TRUST SAM COMPLETELY.

At 8:22:

CHECK THE AUDIO BEFORE YOU TRUST ANYONE IN THAT ROOM.

“What room?” Emily asked.

“The meeting?”

“Probably.”

Then one final message arrived.

THE MAN WHO ORDERED BELL WASN’T CHARLES.

I stared at the screen.

Emily whispered, “Then who?”

The anonymous sender did not reply again.

By the following afternoon, forensic technicians had successfully imaged Robert’s flash drive.

Most of the files were financial records.

Trust documents.

Scans.

Photographs.

Then came an audio file.

Twenty-seven minutes.

Dated the day Robert died.

Detective Cho insisted we listen at the station.

The recording began with chairs moving.

Charles Bennett’s voice was the first I recognized.

Then Robert.

Older than I remembered.

Impatient.

Alive.

“You used my daughter’s identity.”

Charles answered.

“You’re overstating what happened.”

“I have her Social Security number on accounts she never opened.”

Bell spoke next.

“Robert, lower your voice.”

My hands became fists.

My husband said, “You don’t get to tell me what to do with my voice.”

Emily began crying silently.

The argument continued.

Charles blamed old Northbridge processes.

Robert accused him of forging documents.

Bell said little.

Then, eleven minutes in, Robert mentioned Thomas Carter.

Charles stopped speaking.

Bell said, “You should leave Thomas out of this.”

“Why?”

“Because you don’t understand whose structure you’re disturbing.”

Robert laughed once.

“Then explain it.”

A third male voice entered the recording.

Not Charles.

Not Bell.

I looked at Cho.

“Who is that?”

She raised one hand.

Listen.

The third man spoke calmly.

“Robert, this has gone far enough.”

My stomach dropped.

I knew the voice.

Not well.

But I knew it.

Emily turned toward me.

“Mom?”

I did not answer.

Robert said on the recording, “You weren’t supposed to be here.”

The man replied, “Neither were you.”

I closed my eyes.

The voice belonged to Samuel Grant.

The man sitting in the parking garage had not remained outside.

He had entered the meeting.

And in the recording Robert made hours before his death, our closest family friend was speaking as though he belonged on the other side of the table.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Robert’s Secret Recording Proved Samuel Had Lied to Us, and the
