looked toward Harold’s chair.

“Does every issue in my life now begin with you saying that?”

“This one isn't about Harold.”

That got my attention.

“What is it about?”

“Your charitable foundation.”

“What happened?”

“The publicity worked.”

“That doesn't sound like a problem.”

“It depends.”

“On what?”

“On whether you're prepared for what five million dollars attracts.”

I waited.

Rebecca continued.

“We've received more than four hundred funding requests since the story broke.”

I closed my eyes.

“Four hundred?”

“And one of them is from someone you know.”

“Who?”

There was a pause.

“Lorraine Becker.”

I remembered the cheerful message from the woman who had not called since Harold’s funeral.

“What does Lorraine want?”

“Not money for herself.”

“What then?”

Rebecca’s voice changed.

“She runs a nonprofit.”

I stared through the window.

“I didn't know that.”

“Neither did I.”

“What kind?”

“Housing assistance for widowed women.”

The coincidence was almost absurd.

“How much is she asking for?”

“One point eight million dollars.”

I laughed once.

Then Rebecca added, “Margaret, before you dismiss it, you should know something.”

“What?”

“On paper, her organization is exactly the kind of program you said you wanted to support.”

I looked at the signed Desert Oak documents still lying on the table.

Money had finally stopped being a test between Daniel and me.

Now it was about to test something else.

Whether I could judge a request on its merits when I did not trust the person making it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: A Woman
