him.”

“Yes.”

“So kissing him seems inconsistent.”

“Only if divorce means you must stop having feelings.”

“I thought that was expensive watch.

I noticed his wrist.

“Sold that one too?”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“Debt?”

“Yes.”

“How much left?”

“One twenty-eight.”

“Progress.”

“Painful progress.”

We ordered.

Then Mark surprised me.

“I don’t want to talk about money tonight.”

“Are you ill?”

“Possibly.”

We talked about books.

Travel.

My work.

His new company.

He told me his CEO course.”

“Then I realized she was right.”

“That must have been medically difficult.”

“Extremely.”

He smiled.

“She told me something interesting.”

“What?”

“That I answer questions too quickly.”

I laughed.

“She figured that out already?”

“Apparently.”

“What does she mean?”

“I treat uncertainty like incompetence.”

That sounded familiar.

“So when I don’t know, I produce an answer.”

“Even a bad one.”

“Especially a bad one.”

“Why?”

“Because an answer feels like control.”

There it was.

Same mechanism.

Different setting.

“How are you fixing it?”

“I say I don’t know.”

“That sounds unbearable.”

“It is.”

We laughed.

Halfway through dinner, Mark asked about Andrew.

Not by name.

“The person you had dinner with.”

My body tightened slightly.

He noticed.

“You don’t have to answer.”

“I know.”

“Are you seeing him?”

“Not romantically right now.”

Mark nodded.

Relief flashed.

He did not hide it.

“You’re relieved.”

“Yes.”

“Is that a problem?”

“I don’t think feeling relieved is.”

“Good answer.”

“I’ve had training.”

I smiled.

Then said, “I might date other people.”

His expression tightened.

“I know.”

“Would you still want to see me?”

He thought.

“That depends.”

I appreciated that.

“On?”

“Whether I could do it without making you responsible for my jealousy.”

“And could you?”

“I don’t know.”

There.

The answer he was learning to tolerate.

“I might need distance.”

“That would be fair.”

“I don’t want to pretend I’m capable of some enlightened friendship while watching you fall in love with someone else.”

“That would be awful.”

“Yes.”

“For both of us.”

“Yes.”

We sat quietly.

Then Mark asked, “Are you asking because you want to date other people?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I don’t want us drifting into exclusivity without choosing it.”

His eyes widened slightly.

That was something old Sophie might have allowed.

Assumption.

Momentum.

A relationship forming because nobody named alternatives.

Not anymore.

“What do you want?” he asked.

“For tonight?”

“Yes.”

“You.”

His face changed.

I felt heat rise into my cheeks.

“But.”

“Of course there’s a but.”

“I don’t know what I want next month.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

“You?”

“You tonight.”

I smiled.

“And next month?”

“I want to say you.”

“But?”

“I’m learning not to promise answers I haven’t earned.”

That sentence stayed with me.

After dinner, we walked.

At my building, the old tension returned.

The doorway where we had once said goodbye before the divorce.

The apartment above us.

My apartment.

My keys.

My choice.

Mark stopped.

“Good night.”

He did not ask to come upstairs.

Part of me was disappointed.

That surprised me.

“Good night.”

He leaned in.

Stopped.

“Can I?”

“Yes.”

We kissed.

Longer this time.

My hands went to his shoulders.

His went to my waist.

I felt the old familiarity and something new beneath it.

Restraint.

Not distance.

Attention.

He waited for my movement before deepening the kiss.

When we separated, I was breathing hard.

So was he.

“You should go,” I said.

“Yes.”

Neither moved.

I laughed.

“Mark.”

“I mattered.

Not because sex would have been wrong.

Because I wanted another night to remain a choice rather than momentum.

Saturday morning, I received no dramatic message.

At noon:

Last night was good. Thank you.

I replied:

It was.

That was enough.

Over the next three weeks, we went on four dates.

Slowly.

No sleepovers.

No man you divorced.”

“Yes.”

“Recently.”

“Yes.”

Mom sat down.

I waited.

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

Then said:

“Do you want my opinion?”

I almost hugged her.

“Not yet.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

“That was physically painful, wasn’t it?”

“Extremely.”

I laughed.

Then became serious.

“I’m not undoing the divorce.”

“I know.”

“I’m not giving him the condo.”

“I assumed.”

“No thought.

“Your home.”

That was better.

Much better.

We cleaned dishes together.

Then sat on the couch.

Mark looked nervous.

“What?”

“I have something to ask.”

My body tightened.

He saw it.

“No financial component.”

“That narrows things.”

He smiled.

Then became serious.

“My company wants me to travel more.”

“Okay.”

“Boston twice a month.”

“Okay.”

“And possibly London for three weeks.”

“That sounds good.”

“I think so.”

“Then?”

“I noticed my first instinct was to ask whether you’d be okay with it.”

“That seems normal if we’re dating.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“My second instinct was to worry you’d interpret travel as lack of commitment.”

I waited.

“So I almost declined before talking to you.”

I frowned.

“That would be stupid.”

“Yes.”

“You want to go?”

“Yes.”

“Then go.”

He smiled.

“I’m going.”

“Good.”

No sacrifice manufactured to prove love.

No hidden resentment later.

Simple.

Then Mark said, “That wasn’t the question.”

“Of course not.”

He took a breath.

“What are we doing?”

There it was.

The question we had avoided.

I looked at him.

“Dating.”

“Yes.”

“Exclusively?”

“I am.”

“I am too.”

That was new information spoken aloud.

“Do you want that?”

“Yes.”

“So do I.”

His face softened.

“But that’s not what you mean.”

“No.”

“What do you mean?”

He looked at his hands.

“I’m trying to understand whether we’re building toward something or simply enjoying something.”

I thought carefully.

“What answer do you want?”

He smiled faintly.

“Building.”

“Toward marriage?”

He went still.

“I don’t know.”

That surprised me.

Months earlier, he would have said yes before I finished the question.

“Why don’t you know?”

“Because I don’t know whether marriage is what would make this healthier.”

I stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

“I used to think commitment meant merging.”

“Money.”

“Property. Problems. Decisions. Everything.”

“Yes.”

“And I’m trying to figure out what commitment means if it doesn’t require ownership.”

The question moved through me.

I did not know either.

Mark continued.

“I want a future with you.”

My heart accelerated.

“I don’t know whether I need a marriage certificate to prove that.”

I smiled sadly.

“You cared about the certificate before.”

“Yes.”

“For terrible reasons.”

“Some terrible.”

“Some good.”

“Yes.”

We sat quietly.

Then I asked, “Would you ever marry me again?”

Mark looked directly at me.

“I would only want to if you could say no without losing anything.”

My throat tightened.

“What would I lose?”

“If we built our lives around marriage being required, then saying no might mean losing me.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t want that.”

“What do you want?”

“I want us to become stable enough that marriage would be an option, not a rescue.”

That sentence stayed between us.

An option.

Not leverage.

Not proof.

Not access.

Not a solution.

A choice.

I reached for his hand.

He held mine lightly.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then I asked:

“Do you want a key?”

His entire body went still.

He looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“No.”

I blinked.

“No?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to know I can be here without needing access.”

My eyes filled.

“That might be the strangest romantic thing you’ve ever said.”

He laughed.

“I’m getting better.”

“You are.”

He squeezed my hand.

Then something in me settled.

Not certainty.

Not forgiveness completed.

Not trust restored all at once.

Something quieter.

Possibility.

Mark had finally learned that access was not love.

And I was beginning to learn that protecting myself did not require closing every door forever.

Click here to continue reading: PART 41: Months After I Got My Condo Back, Mark Refused the One Opportunity That Would Have Proved Whether His Old Instincts Still Controlled Him

Mark did not text that night.
