disappear.”

“Yes.”

“So what do you recommend?”

Mark did not hesitate.

“Do not pay.”

David looked at him.

“I never said I was going to.”

“No,” Mark said. “You said you wanted to discuss options.”

“That’s not the same.”

I watched them.

A familiar pattern.

David wanted solutions that preserved control.

Mark was telling him control was already gone.

I asked, “Has anyone contacted law enforcement?”

“No,” David said.

Jessica’s voice sharpened.

“Why not?”

“Because if the records become public, Mercer collapses.”

“It may collapse anyway.”

“Hundreds of people lose jobs.”

“You should have considered that before falsifying consents.”

“I know.”

“No, you keep saying that after the consequences arrive.”

David looked at me.

“What do you want me to do?”

The question stunned me.

For twelve years, he had rarely asked what I wanted unless the answer involved paint colors or vacation dates.

Now he looked at me as if I could tell him how to escape the life he had constructed.

“I want you to tell the truth.”

“To whom?”

“Everyone who needs it.”

His face tightened.

“That could destroy the company.”

“Maybe the company is already destroyed.”

“You don’t understand—”

I stood again.

He stopped.

The phrase hung unfinished between us.

You don’t understand.

His old weapon.

He heard it too.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I stared at him.

“Don’t apologize for the sentence. Stop believing it.”

He looked away.

Jessica began discussing immediate steps with Mark.

Preserve the blackmail messages.

No payment.

Contact counsel with experience in financial crimes.

Notify the appropriate insurer through attorneys.

Determine whether any lender disclosures must be corrected.

Protect relevant employees from retaliation.

My mind remained on Melissa Crane.

A woman I barely knew.

A woman whose office number apparently appeared on an insurance application connected to my life.

“Where is Melissa?” I asked.

David looked at me.

“She resigned.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

“Before or after Peter?”

“After.”

“Where is she now?”

“I don’t know.”

Jessica was already searching her notes.

“We’ll locate her.”

David spoke quietly.

“You may not have to.”

“Why?”

“Nathan mentioned her.”

“In the threat?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

David reached into his bag and removed a printed email.

Mark looked irritated.

“You shouldn’t have brought a loose copy.”

“It’s already preserved.”

He handed it to Jessica.

She read silently.

Then passed it to me.

The message contained only a few lines.

No greeting.

No emotional language.

Nathan Bell wrote that David knew what the records showed.

He knew what Melissa had done.

He knew why Peter had left.

And if David wanted the full file to remain private, he knew the number.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

Ask Claire whether she remembers Sedona.

My hands stopped.

Jessica saw it.

“What is Sedona?”

I looked at David.

His face had gone pale.

“What?”

“Claire,” he said, “I need you to think carefully.”

“About what?”

“Did anything happen in Sedona?”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

I stared.

There had been dozens of trips.

Family weekends.

A school break.

A company retreat.

Then one memory surfaced.

A winter weekend.

David had insisted I come because he said we never spent time alone anymore.

We stayed at a resort.

On the second evening, I became violently ill.

I had blamed food poisoning.

Hours of nausea.

Dizziness.

A strange heaviness in my limbs.

David had called a private doctor to the room instead of taking me to the emergency department.

By morning I felt better.

I had forgotten most of it.

Until now.

I looked at him.

“The resort.”

His breathing changed.

“You got sick.”

“Yes.”

Jessica asked, “Why would Bell mention that?”

No one answered.

I kept staring at David.

“Who was the doctor?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You arranged it.”

“Through the hotel.”

“You wouldn’t let me go to the hospital.”

“I thought it was food poisoning.”

“You said hospitals were unnecessary.”

“That’s what the doctor said.”

“Who was he?”

“I don’t know.”

The certainty was gone from his voice.

For the first time, David looked genuinely afraid of an event from our past.

Jessica took the email from my hand.

“We need the hotel records.”

Mark nodded.

“And insurance records from that period.”

I stood completely still.

A copied signature could be greed.

A hidden loan could be desperation.

A secret insurance policy could be financial manipulation.

But Nathan Bell had connected that policy to a night when I had suddenly become sick in a hotel room.

I did not know why.

I did not know whether the connection was real.

I refused to accuse anyone without evidence.

But the question had changed.

It was no longer simply what David had tried to hide during our divorce.

It was what Nathan Bell believed happened in Sedona.

And why he thought reminding me of it was worth two million dollars.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Returned to the Sedona Hotel Looking for a Doctor’s Name, and Found
