Melissa?”

“Yes.”

“Nathan?”

“Yes.”

“What did David say?”

Peter’s voice became heavy.

“He asked whether changing the notary fixed the problem.”

“And?”

“I said the signature itself was the problem.”

“What did he say?”

“He said Claire had intended to sign.”

I closed my eyes.

No.

I had refused.

He knew.

“Then what?”

“Melissa started crying.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“She said she couldn’t keep doing this.”

“Doing what?”

“Cleaning documents after transactions.”

Jessica asked, “Is that why she later resigned?”

“I think so.”

“Do you know where she is?”

“No.”

Marcus had already found an address.

Tucson.

Melissa had left corporate work entirely.

She was now listed as administrator for a nonprofit legal aid clinic.

Jessica requested that Marcus contact her attorney if she had one.

He did not call Melissa directly.

By early evening, we received a response.

Melissa would speak.

But only under one condition.

I read the message twice.

“What condition?”

Jessica looked at me.

“She refuses to be in the same room as David.”

“That’s not difficult.”

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“She says she has records.”

My pulse quickened.

“What records?”

“Copies of documents she removed before leaving Mercer Development.”

“Why?”

Jessica read the message again.

“Because she believed David and Nathan would destroy them.”

I looked at Marcus.

“How soon can we meet her?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

The next line of Melissa’s message made all three of us stop.

She specifically wrote that she had kept one item because she feared that if anything happened to me, someone needed proof.

I read those words until they blurred.

If anything happened to Claire Mercer.

The insurance policy.

Sedona.

The falsified consent.

Nathan’s threat.

For days I had resisted assuming the worst.

I still resisted it.

Evidence mattered.

Facts mattered.

But now a woman who had worked inside David’s company was telling us she had preserved something because she feared for my safety.

And for the first time, I understood why Mark Holloway had chosen his words so carefully when he warned me about risks that were not merely financial.

<a
