moved?”

“Yesterday.”

“Approved?”

“Yes.”

“Room for him?”

“Yes.”

“Bed?”

“Yes.”

“You already prepared a room.”

David looked embarrassed.

“I hoped.”

Not assumed.

Hoped.

That distinction mattered too.

“I want to see it first.”

“Of course.”

“Sam too.”

“Yes.”

“And first overnight is one night.”

“Yes.”

“No pushing for more because it goes well.”

“Yes.”

“No taking a yes as a precedent.”

He smiled slightly.

“I really did learn the curriculum.”

“Good.”

I agreed to visit Saturday.

After David left, I stood in the kitchen for a long time.

There was a strange discomfort in seeing him do things correctly.

Anger is simple when the person keeps failing.

Change complicates it.

If David became reliable, I could not continue relating only to the man who had not been.

That did not mean forgetting.

It meant updating.

Another form of evidence.

Saturday, Sam and I visited David’s apartment.

Two bedrooms.

Small kitchen.

Second-floor balcony overlooking a parking lot.

No stone.

No designer furniture.

No wine room.

No office with a locked cabinet.

Sam’s room had a twin bed, desk, baseball poster, and empty shelf.

“Where are my Legos?”

“At your house,” I said.

Sam looked at David.

“Can I keep some here?”

David answered, “If your mom agrees.”

I nearly laughed.

“Yes.”

Sam ran into the kitchen.

David lowered his voice.

“How am I doing?”

“That question is dangerously close to asking for a grade.”

“I know.”

“Keep going.”

He nodded.

On the wall near his desk was one framed photograph.

Sam at age four sitting on David’s shoulders.

Nothing else.

No Mercer award.

No Canyon Vista.

No corporate magazine cover.

No mansion.

“You really got rid of everything.”

“Almost.”

“What did you keep?”

He opened a drawer.

Inside was the yellow legal pad.

The original.

Everything circled twice.

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

“I thought about throwing it away.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I don’t want to forget who wrote it.”

I stared at the page.

“You’re not only that person.”

“I know.”

“Then why keep it?”

“To remember what happens when I start believing I can control outcomes by controlling people.”

I handed it back.

“That’s very therapy.”

“Extremely.”

Sam shouted from the bedroom.

“Can I put glow stars on the ceiling?”

David called, “Yes.”

I raised an eyebrow.

He corrected himself immediately.

“If the lease allows it.”

I laughed.

That was when I knew the overnight would probably be fine.

Not because David had become perfect.

Because perfection was never the goal.

Reliability was.

Humility.

Stopping when told no.

Asking instead of assuming.

Small things.

Hard things.

The kinds of things nobody put on a yellow legal pad.

<a
