laughed.

Outside the café, he asked, “Can I hug you?”

“Yes.”

We hugged.

Briefly.

When we separated, neither moved immediately.

I looked at his mouth.

He noticed.

My pulse quickened.

Mark took one small step backward.

That surprised me.

“Why did you move?”

“Because I want to kiss you.”

“So?”

“I don’t know whether you want me to.”

I smiled.

“You could ask.”

He stared.

Apparently the obvious solution had not occurred to him.

“Can I kiss you?”

I considered.

Not for effect.

Actually considered.

“Yes.”

He kissed me.

Softly.

No urgency.

His hands remained light at my waist.

I stepped closer because I wanted to.

When we separated, Mark’s eyes were closed.

He opened them.

Neither of us spoke.

Then I said:

“That was not a proposal.”

He laughed.

“No.”

“Not reconciliation.”

“No.”

“Not even necessarily dating.”

He smiled.

“You’re ruining the moment.”

“I’m protecting it.”

His smile faded into something gentler.

“Fair.”

We walked in opposite directions.

I touched my mouth once.

Then laughed at myself.

That night, I did not regret the kiss.

That frightened me more than regret would have.

<a
