job.”

I waited.

“He asked whether your company had offices in other cities.”

“The city near the new house?”

“I don't remember.”

“Did he mention remote work?”

“Yes.”

I leaned back.

The same questions Ryan later asked Claire.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because it sounded like normal conversation.”

And perhaps it had.

That was the genius of Ryan's preparation.

Every individual question looked harmless.

Only when assembled did they become architecture.

Dad stared at the table.

“He asked something else.”

“What?”

“Whether you would ever sell the house voluntarily.”

My skin prickled.

“What did you say?”

“That you'd probably sell if the children needed you somewhere else.”

I closed my eyes.

Dad's face changed.

“Oh, God.”

“He used you to test the plan.”

“I didn't know.”

“I know.”

That was the first time I said those words to him without anger.

Because this time, he truly hadn't.

Ryan had asked a hypothetical question.

Dad had answered.

The information became another entry.

Another prediction.

Another lever.

The following day, Claire's attorney provided records from her own finances.

She had contributed money toward furniture, moving expenses, and the wedding.

A lot of money.

More than I expected.

When Claire called, her voice was flat.

“He told me the house deposit was his.”

“It wasn't.”

“I know.”

“Did he ask you for money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Almost everything I had saved.”

I said nothing.

“He said because he was leaving the marital house to you, he was starting over with nothing.”

The manipulation was almost elegant.

To me, Ryan presented himself as generous for letting the children remain in our home.

To Claire, he presented himself as sacrificed and financially depleted because I remained there.

Then he used money he had quietly removed from our marriage to establish his next household.

“He told me we'd own something together later,” Claire said.

“But the house is rented.”

“He said after the custody arrangement stabilized, we'd buy.”

“With what?”

She laughed bitterly.

“Apparently your house.”

There was no satisfaction in hearing it.

“Did you know he planned to split the kids after a year?”

“No.”

“He wrote that four children wouldn't all be there forever.”

Claire went silent.

“The nursery only has room because two kids were going to share.”

“I know.”

“Did he tell you they'd eventually go back to Annie?”

“No.”

“Who did you think would share?”

“The younger two.”

“For how long?”

“I didn't ask.”

That answer was ugly enough without embellishment.

“Why not?”

“Because I was trying to convince myself I could handle becoming a stepmother to four children while pregnant.”

“You wanted the wedding.”

“Yes.”

“So you ignored the math.”

“Yes.”

I appreciated the lack of defense.

Then Claire said, “There is another financial thing.”

Of course there was.

“What?”

“The life insurance.”

My stomach tightened.

“What life insurance?”

“Ryan increased his policy.”

“That isn't unusual with children.”

“Not his.”

I stopped.

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

I stood.

“What are you talking about?”

“He mentioned you had a policy through work and another private one.”

I did.

Ryan and I had purchased policies after Amelia was born.

“What does that have to do with him?”

“He asked whether he was still beneficiary after the separation.”

My skin went cold.

“Was he?”

“I don't know.”

I did.

I had forgotten to update it immediately.

Later, during the divorce paperwork, I changed the beneficiary structure for the children's benefit.

But there had been a period after separation when Ryan remained named.

“Why was he asking you about it?”

“He said it affected financial planning if something happened to either of you.”

That could be innocent.

I refused to turn it into something sinister merely because everything else was ugly.

“Did he ever suggest something would happen to me?”

“No.”

“Then don't imply that.”

“I'm not.”

“Good.”

I ended the call and informed Mara.

She agreed the insurance question might be financially relevant but warned against interpreting it beyond evidence.

That boundary mattered.

Ryan had done enough.

I did not need to invent more.

The actual evidence kept arriving anyway.

A bank statement showed Ryan paying a consultation fee to a family-law firm nearly a year before our separation.

Not the attorney he currently used.

Another firm.

Mara requested the permissible records surrounding the payment.

We could not obtain privileged legal advice.

We did not need to.

The date alone mattered.

Ryan had sought family-law counsel while telling me we were planning our future.

I remembered that month.

We had been discussing a summer trip.

He bought me a necklace for our anniversary.

He told me he loved me.

And apparently he also paid someone who practiced divorce and custody law.

That night, I found the necklace in the back of my jewelry drawer.

I held it for a long time.

Then put it back.

Not everything needed a symbolic ending.

Sometimes an object was only an object.

The next morning, Dad called.

His voice sounded strained.

“I remembered something else.”

“What?”

“The bank.”

“What bank?”

“The day Ryan asked about the house.”

I waited.

“He asked whether you could qualify for a mortgage alone.”

“Why would you know?”

“I used to work in lending.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That your income was probably enough if your debts stayed low.”

Dad paused.

“But then he asked what would happen if your income dropped.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you say?”

“That you'd have trouble refinancing.”

I gripped the phone.

“Why would my income drop?”

“I asked him that.”

“And?”

“He said your company was restructuring.”

It hadn't been.

Not then.

“Did he know something?”

“I don't know.”

Mara later found the answer in Ryan's spreadsheet.

Beside notes about my employer was a line:

If A reduces hours after baby, refinance unlikely.

The entry was dated during my fifth pregnancy.

Ryan expected me to reduce my hours after the baby was born.

We had discussed it together.

He had encouraged me.

He had said we could afford it.

I stared at the spreadsheet.

If I reduced my income, refinancing the house alone would become harder.

If the marriage then ended, I would have fewer financial options.

My pregnancy had not merely complicated Ryan's timeline.

It had offered another potential lever.

Then I noticed the next line.

If pregnancy ends, likely extended leave anyway.

I stopped.

He had planned for both outcomes.

A healthy baby: I reduce work.

A loss: I take leave.

Either way, Ryan expected my income to fall.

Either way, he believed the house would become harder for me to keep.

For the first time, I understood the full cruelty of his planning.

He had not predicted my miscarriage.

He had not caused it.

But before it happened, he had already considered how either possible outcome of my pregnancy could make me financially weaker.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Ryan’s Financial Plan
