froze.

Rachel looked at him.

“Answer her.”

Dad stared at me.

“I said you understood it was impractical.”

“That isn’t what Rachel remembers.”

He glanced at her.

She didn’t look away.

“You told me Emily agreed.”

His face reddened.

“I may have said that based on what I believed.”

Rachel laughed sharply.

“No.”

Dad pointed toward the documents.

“None of this matters if you sign the clarification.”

Melissa stepped forward.

“It matters considerably, Mr. Carter.”

He turned on her.

“This is a family issue.”

“You brought legal documents into my client’s workplace and asked her to sign them.”

“They only confirm what happened.”

Melissa picked up the first page.

“They confirm that Ms. Carter requested several transfers from the Hale Family Trust.”

Rachel stared at Dad.

“I never requested them.”

Dad’s voice rose.

“You benefited from them.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“It is in practical terms.”

Melissa shook her head.

“No. It is not.”

Dad looked around the room as though everyone had suddenly betrayed him.

Then he gathered the papers.

“You’re all making an enormous mistake.”

Rachel stood.

“No.”

Her voice shook, but she held his gaze.

“I think I already made one.”

Dad stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“I trusted you without reading anything.”

His face changed.

Rachel continued.

“That ends now.”

For one second, I saw real fear in my father’s eyes.

He tucked the documents under his arm and walked out.

Nobody moved until the elevator doors closed.

Then Rachel sat down hard.

Melissa put a hand on her shoulder.

I noticed one sheet of paper still lying beneath the table.

Dad had dropped it.

I bent to pick it up.

At first I thought it was another transfer record.

Then I saw the address.

It was Grandma’s music studio.

Beside the property description was a proposed transfer.

Recipient: Harold Carter Holdings LLC.

I stared at the date.

Three weeks earlier.

Before the cello was sold.

Before the pool.

Before any of us knew something was wrong.

Rachel came beside me.

“What is it?”

I showed her.

Her face drained.

“He was trying to transfer Grandma’s studio to himself.”

Melissa took the page carefully.

“No.”

She pointed to a line near the bottom.

“He wasn’t trying.”

I followed her finger.

Recorded.

The transfer had already happened.

<a
