28 – Thomas’s Accident Put Me Beside the Man Who Helped Use My House, and His Hospital Confession Explained Why He Chose My Number

Thomas had three broken ribs, a fractured wrist, and a cut above his eyebrow requiring twelve stitches.

No spinal injury.

No head trauma beyond a mild concussion.

The nurse told me all of that before I saw him.

Marissa stood beside me in the hospital corridor.

Her face was pale.

"Why did he call you?"

"I don't know."

"He has my number."

"I know."

"He has my mother's number."

Thomas's wife, Janet, had been visiting her sister in Florida.

She was already trying to arrange a flight home.

Preston had driven Marissa.

Emma came with us despite everyone telling her she could stay at the cabin.

She had answered, "Stop deciding what I can handle."

That ended the discussion.

Thomas looked terrible.

Which I told him.

He smiled weakly.

"You always know what to say."

"Apparently."

Marissa reached him first.

She kissed his forehead.

"What happened?"

"Deer."

"Seriously?"

"Large one."

"You swerved?"

"Apparently badly."

She closed her eyes.

"You idiot."

"Genetics."

He looked at Emma.

"Come here."

She hugged him carefully.

Then Thomas looked at me.

"Raymond."

"Why am I your emergency contact?"

Marissa stared.

"Grandpa."

"What?"

"He has broken ribs."

"He can answer."

Thomas laughed, then immediately regretted it.

"Don't make me laugh."

"Answer."

He looked at Marissa.

"Can I talk to Raymond alone?"

Her expression changed.

"Dad."

"Please."

She didn't like it.

Neither did I.

But she nodded.

Preston took Emma into the hallway.

Marissa followed reluctantly.

I pulled a chair beside the bed.

Thomas stared at the ceiling.

"I changed my emergency contact two months ago."

"Why?"

"Because Janet was traveling."

"Marissa exists."

"I know."

"Then why me?"

He turned his head.

"Because I needed somebody who wouldn't protect her from the truth."

The sentence landed immediately.

"What truth?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Nothing criminal."

"Your family's definitions worry me."

He smiled faintly.

"I've been paying some of Marissa's expenses."

"How much?"

"Not huge."

"Thomas."

"About fourteen thousand since she moved out."

I leaned back.

"Does she know?"

"Some."

"Preston?"

"No."

"Why would he need to?"

"Because part of their financial disclosure during the separation assumes she's supporting herself."

There it was.

Another secret.

Smaller.

Still a secret.

"You've been subsidizing her."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"She's my daughter."

"That's not an explanation."

"It's enough for me."

"Apparently not, or you wouldn't be telling me from a hospital bed."

He stared at the blanket.

"Janet told me to stop."

"Smart woman."

"Marissa was struggling."

"So you paid."

"Yes."

"Without requiring her to adjust anything."

"She did adjust."

"Then why hide it?"

He sighed.

"Because she was ashamed."

I laughed softly.

Thomas frowned.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"No, what?"

"Every secret in this family apparently comes with the same instruction manual."

He knew I was right.

"I didn't want Preston using it against her."

"During divorce negotiations."

"Yes."

"Are they divorcing?"

"Looks that way."

"That's theirs."

"I know."

"Do you?"

He looked at me.

"You've become irritating."

"Therapy."

He smiled.

Then winced from his ribs.

"Why make me your emergency contact?"

He became serious.

"Because I wrote everything down."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Not about your house."

"Then?"

"Marissa."

He pointed weakly toward a bag on the chair.

"My briefcase."

I opened it.

Inside was a folder.

Payments.

Rent assistance.

Car insurance.

Attorney retainer.

Credit-card settlement contribution.

All documented.

"You paid part of the fraudulent card settlement?"

"Three thousand."

"Does Emma know?"

"No."

My anger rose.

"Thomas."

"I know."

"No, apparently nobody knows anything until I find a folder."

"I was going to tell her."

"Stop."

He closed his eyes.

"Fair."

I looked through the documents.

"Why me?"

"If something happened to me, I wanted somebody to make sure Marissa didn't keep pretending she did everything herself."

"Why?"

"Because it isn't helping her."

That surprised me.

Thomas continued.

"I watched what happened with you and Preston."

"Not a flattering example."

"No."

"I realized I'm doing a quieter version."

I sat back.

"Rescuing."

"Yes."

"Does Janet know everything?"

"Yes."

"Good."

"She's furious."

"Better."

He smiled.

"You're enjoying this."

"A little."

Thomas looked toward the door.

"I love my daughter."

"I know."

"I don't want her to fail."

"I know."

"But I think I've spent forty years teaching her that if she gets close enough to failure, I'll appear."

That sounded painfully familiar.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Give her the folder."

"No."

He looked surprised.

"Why not?"

"You're alive."

"Raymond."

"You have three broken ribs, not a funeral scheduled."

He almost laughed again.

"Don't."

I continued.

"You tell her."

"I don't know how."

I stared.

Then we both started laughing.

Thomas clutched his ribs.

"Damn you."

"Sorry."

"No, you're not."

"No."

When Marissa returned, Thomas told her.

Not elegantly.

Not gently.

He simply said, "I've been hiding how much I've helped you, and I think it's making things worse."

Marissa stared.

"What?"

He explained.

The fourteen thousand.

The settlement contribution.

The documents.

Her face reddened.

"You told Raymond?"

"I asked him to make sure you knew if something happened."

"Dad."

"I was wrong."

She stood.

"Why is everybody suddenly obsessed with confessing things?"

From the hallway, Emma said, "Because apparently not doing that destroyed Christmas."

Marissa turned.

Emma stood beside Preston.

Nobody had invited them back yet.

Apparently hospital privacy was flexible.

Thomas smiled.

"She's not wrong."

Marissa looked at me.

"You knew for what, ten minutes?"

"Approximately."

"And you're already judging me."

"No."

That surprised her.

"I'm judging him."

I pointed at Thomas.

"Thank you," Marissa said.

"Don't enjoy it."

Thomas sighed.

Marissa looked through the folder.

"You paid my attorney retainer?"

"Yes."

"I told you I had savings."

"You did."

"I lied."

Thomas blinked.

"What?"

Marissa closed her eyes.

"I didn't have savings."

Now everyone stared.

Preston leaned against the wall.

"How much did you have?"

"Almost nothing."

"Then how were you planning to pay the lawyer?"

"I wasn't."

Preston laughed once.

Not cruelly.

Just exhausted.

"Of course."

Marissa looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"No. Say it."

He shook his head.

"We're unbelievable."

Emma folded her arms.

"Speak for yourselves."

That broke the tension.

Even Thomas laughed, then swore because of his ribs.

The nurse came in and told all of us to stop making the patient laugh.

We obeyed for approximately three minutes.

Thomas stayed overnight.

Janet arrived the next afternoon and immediately scolded him for swerving.

"I was avoiding a deer."

"You drive through it."

"Janet."

"Not a full-grown one. Brake."

I liked her.

She thanked me for coming.

Then told Thomas she had been telling him for months to stop paying Marissa's expenses.

Marissa heard.

This time she did not become defensive.

She sat beside her father's bed and said, "I need to stop taking money from everybody."

Thomas looked at her.

"I offered."

"I know."

"So did Raymond with Preston."

I looked at him.

"Don't involve me."

"You started this."

"I absolutely did not."

Emma smiled.

Marissa looked at her father.

"I want to repay you."

"No."

"Dad."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I gave it."

"Then let me repay the three thousand that went toward Emma's debt."

Thomas hesitated.

"Why that?"

"Because that wasn't yours to fix."

Emma watched carefully.

Thomas looked at her.

"Fair."

Marissa nodded.

"Not immediately."

"Good."

"Monthly."

"Fine."

"No interest."

Emma raised her hand.

"I have opinions."

Everyone laughed.

The nurse appeared at the door.

"Seriously?"

"Sorry," Thomas said.

She glared.

We became quiet.

Later, Preston and I walked to the parking garage.

He had been unusually silent.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

"Bad answer."

He smiled.

"Watching Thomas made me think."

"Dangerous."

"He did what you did."

"Paid."

"Yes."

"And what Mom did."

"Protected."

"And what Marissa did."

"Hid."

"And what I did."

"All three."

He nodded.

"I keep wanting there to be one moment where everything went wrong."

"There probably isn't."

"That's frustrating."

"Reality often is."

He stopped beside his car.

"I signed the divorce petition."

I looked at him.

"When?"

"Yesterday."

"Marissa knows?"

"Yes."

"How are you?"

He took a long breath.

"Sad."

"Good."

He looked at me.

"Seriously?"

"Would you prefer happy?"

"No."

"Then sad seems appropriate."

He laughed.

"Terrified too."

"Also appropriate."

"I still love her."

"I know."

"She still loves me."

"Probably."

"Then why does divorce feel right?"

I leaned against the car.

"Because love is not always instructions."

He stared.

"Did Mom say that?"

"No."

"Dr. Ortiz?"

"No."

"You?"

"Apparently."

"That's annoyingly good."

"Thank you."

He looked toward the hospital.

"Emma seems okay."

"She's not."

"I know."

"But she's functioning."

"Yes."

"College might be good."

"Probably."

He nodded.

"I'm going to miss her."

"Tell her."

"I do."

"Then don't turn missing her into a reason she should stay."

He smiled faintly.

"Management."

"Exactly."

Two months later, Preston and Marissa's divorce became formal.

No courtroom fight.

No dramatic accusation.

Their lawyers divided what remained.

Which wasn't much.

Marissa kept her apartment.

Preston kept his.

They shared responsibility for Emma's remaining expenses by agreement even though she was legally an adult.

The repayment obligations to Emma remained separate.

Neither could discharge the other's.

Thomas recovered.

He stopped paying Marissa's routine bills.

Janet made sure of it.

Caleb's plea agreement moved forward.

Kessler lost his position and faced professional sanctions.

Preston worked every weekday at the distribution company.

Some evenings he restored the motorcycle.

Marissa painted again.

Emma graduated.

At the ceremony, we all sat in the same row.

Me.

Preston.

Marissa.

Thomas.

Janet.

Dennis.

Sandra.

Claire.

Nobody fought over seats.

Nobody asked who paid for dinner afterward.

I did not.

That required effort.

Emma crossed the stage.

When her name was called, Preston stood too quickly and shouted.

Marissa laughed.

I clapped until my hands hurt.

For one moment, everything that had happened remained true without occupying the whole room.

That evening Emma came home with me.

She removed her graduation gown and hung it over the kitchen chair.

Then she took Eleanor's necklace from beneath her dress.

"Grandma would've cried."

"Yes."

"Would she be proud?"

"Of course."

Emma looked at me.

"Even after everything?"

"Especially because everything happened and you're still moving."

She nodded.

Then handed me an envelope.

"What is this?"

"College."

"Acceptance?"

"You know I got accepted."

"Money?"

"Sort of."

I opened it.

A scholarship award.

Not from Ohio State.

From the foundation Eleanor had supported.

The organization for students who had lost a parent.

I stared.

"Emma."

"I applied."

"When?"

"After you told me about Grandma."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to know why she cared."

I read the award amount.

Ten thousand dollars.

"Did you tell them about Eleanor?"

"Yes."

"Did that influence them?"

"They said donors don't select recipients."

"Good."

"I wrote about Grandma."

My throat tightened.

"What did you say?"

"That she taught me people can love you and still make mistakes."

I looked at her.

"That's what you wrote?"

"Among other things."

"Can I read it?"

"Maybe."

"That's rude."

She smiled.

The scholarship covered almost exactly what Eleanor had ultimately used from Emma's account for my care.

Not perfectly.

Close enough to feel like the kind of coincidence Eleanor would have enjoyed.

"Grandpa."

"Yes?"

"I don't want you to repay Grandma's nine thousand two hundred."

I looked up.

"We documented it."

"I know."

"Priya—"

"Already talked to her."

"Of course."

"I want to forgive that debt."

I stared.

"Why?"

"Because it's mine."

The answer stopped me.

Emma continued.

"That's what everybody keeps saying."

She smiled.

"My money. My claim. My choice."

I nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"I'm choosing."

"Because of the scholarship?"

"No."

"Because she was your grandmother?"

"Partly."

"Because it helped me?"

"Partly."

"Then why?"

Emma touched the pendant.

"Because forgiving something is different when nobody makes you."

I felt my eyes sting.

"You're eighteen. You're not supposed to be smarter than me."

"I'm almost nineteen."

"Worse."

She laughed.

Then she hugged me.

Later, after she went upstairs, I sat alone beside the Christmas village.

It was June.

There was no reason for the village to be displayed.

But I had never packed it away after December.

I looked at the little black lamppost.

The light goes in the middle.

For years I'd thought Eleanor meant composition.

Maybe she did.

That night I understood it differently.

The light did not erase the dark houses around it.

It simply gave you somewhere to look.

My phone rang.

Julian.

I answered.

"If this is another account—"

"It isn't."

"Good."

"It's your estate plan."

"What now?"

"Nothing. It's complete."

I sat back.

"Complete?"

"Unless you change your mind."

"I probably will."

"I've accepted that."

He continued.

"There's one document you need to sign in person."

"I'll come tomorrow."

"Fine."

Then he said, "Raymond."

"What?"

"You're done."

I almost laughed.

"No."

"With this part."

I looked around the room.

That was different.

This part.

Not life.

Not family.

Not grief.

Just this chapter of paperwork, hidden accounts, ownership, access, and control.

"Tomorrow," I said.

"Tomorrow."

I hung up.

Then I noticed something on the mantel.

An envelope.

No stamp.

My name.

For one ridiculous second, I thought Eleanor had discovered another hiding place from beyond the grave.

Then I recognized the handwriting.

Preston's.

I opened it.

One page.

Dad,

This isn't a confession.

That made me smile.

The rest was shorter.

He wrote that his first year of repayment to Emma was now fully scheduled through payroll deductions.

He had also arranged automatic payments for the remaining amount he owed me.

No promises.

No estimate about finishing early.

No request for praise.

At the bottom:

I finally understand that paying something back doesn't undo taking it. I'm doing it anyway.

I read the sentence twice.

Then folded the letter.

For the first time, I did not put it with evidence.

I put it in the drawer where I kept ordinary family letters.

Click here to continue reading: PART 29: Signing My New Estate Plan Should Have Felt Final, Until Julian Showed Me the One Choice Eleanor Had Never Made for Me

Thomas had three broken ribs, a fractured wrist, and a cut above his eyebrow requiring twelve stitches.
