Prosecutors knew exactly what a defense attorney would argue: permanent might mean permanent separation, permanent medical leave, permanent relocation, divorce, or any number of things unrelated to physical harm.

So they went backward.

What had Nolan done before leaving that message?

What did he do afterward?

His search history became important again.

The first searches were consistent with the story he had been constructing around Rachel’s supposed breakdown.

Mental-health retreats.

Emergency leave from employment.

Symptoms of nervous exhaustion.

How long adults could take medical leave.

But other searches appeared later.

How long certain sedating medications remained detectable.

How quickly dehydration became dangerous.

Whether adults could voluntarily disappear without police investigation.

Missing-person reporting requirements.

Rachel listened while Levin described the categories without giving her every phrase.

Her face remained still.

“Were those before or after I was in the garage?”

“Some before. We’re following that evidence. We’re not going to fill gaps with the worst possibility just because it’s frightening.”

Rachel nodded once.

“Thank you.”

That answer surprised me.

Later she explained.

“If everyone around me starts imagining the worst thing, then I have to live through things that didn’t happen too.”

She had already learned something I was still struggling to understand.

Possibility was not memory.

Fear was not evidence.

Nolan had confined her.

He had lied.

He had manipulated her communications.

He had interfered with her access to help.

Those facts were terrible enough.

She did not need invented horrors added to them.

Tessa’s cooperation provided another fragment.

The morning Nolan left the voicemail, he had asked her whether she still had access to a family cabin that belonged to an uncle.

She said no.

He asked when it had last been occupied.

Tessa became suspicious.

“Why?”

Nolan told her Rachel needed somewhere quieter.

Tessa refused.

According to her statement, that was when she first considered going to police.

She still did not.

The delay remained indefensible to Rachel.

But the sequence mattered.

Nolan had apparently been exploring alternate locations.

The garage may have been temporary not because he planned to release Rachel, but because he feared keeping her so close to neighbors.

The delivery driver had nearly approached the door.

I had visited unexpectedly.

Questions were accumulating.

Moving her would solve some of those problems.

The investigation into rural properties intensified.

One property Nolan had viewed online contained a detached workshop.

The owner remembered receiving a message asking whether the building could be locked securely from outside.

The question had seemed ordinary.

Tools were expensive.

The owner replied that it could.

Nolan never rented it.

That exchange became one more piece.

Rachel stopped asking what permanent meant.

Not because she no longer cared.

Because she understood that investigators might never know exactly.

Sometimes a plan is interrupted before it becomes fully visible.

The law can punish what happened and, in some circumstances, what can be proved about intended conduct.

It cannot prosecute every nightmare consistent with incomplete evidence.

Rachel returned to work for three full days the following week.

Her first morning back, she stood outside the office building for nearly ten minutes.

She had worked there six years.

Nothing about the entrance was unfamiliar.

Yet returning meant entering the place Nolan had told people she was too unstable to face.

Her supervisor, Michelle, met her in the lobby.

“You want me to walk up with you?”

Rachel considered.

“No.”

Michelle nodded.

“See you upstairs.”

No fuss.

No concerned hand on her shoulder.

No speech about bravery.

Rachel appreciated that more than she could explain.

She rode the elevator alone.

At her desk she found a small stack of mail, a dead plant and a sticky note from a colleague:

Your spreadsheet is still terrible.

Rachel laughed.

She watered the dead plant anyway.

Work was difficult.

Concentration came and went.

A notification sound sometimes made her pulse jump.

She left early the first day.

Stayed until four the second.

Completed a full schedule the third.

On Friday, she called me.

“I was bored at work.”

“Congratulations.”

“I knew you’d say that.”

“Boredom remains underrated.”

“I spent forty minutes correcting formatting.”

“Living the dream.”

She laughed.

Then said, “I thought I’d never get ordinary things back.”

“You’re getting some.”

“Some.”

The qualification mattered.

No one was pretending recovery meant restoration to an untouched previous self.

That version of Rachel no longer existed.

Neither did the version Nolan had tried to construct.

The woman moving forward was building herself from what remained and what she chose.

The defense filed motions challenging portions of the digital evidence.

They argued that certain searches could have innocent explanations.

They questioned whether some device activity could conclusively be attributed to Nolan.

They attacked Tessa’s credibility because her account changed after she faced possible charges.

All legitimate areas of dispute.

Rachel heard summaries rather than reading filings.

Then something unexpected happened.

Adrian Cole contacted investigators again.

He had found an old email.

Months before Rachel discovered the credit line, Nolan had asked Adrian a hypothetical question about what would happen to business obligations if one spouse became medically incapacitated.

Adrian had answered casually.

He did not remember thinking much of it.

Now he did.

The email did not mention Rachel by name.

But investigators placed it alongside the later draft to her employer, the financial activity, the padlock purchase, the medication, and the searches.

The timeline lengthened.

The planning may have begun much earlier than anyone realized.

Rachel absorbed that without visible reaction.

Then she asked for a copy of one thing.

Not the searches.

Not the threatening voicemail.

Not the photograph of the cleared garage.

She wanted the leave request sent to her employer.

“Why that?”

“Because I want to see how he wrote as me.”

Her attorney discussed it with her.

Eventually Rachel read it.

The message was short.

Polite.

Plausible.

Wrong.

“What’s wrong with it?” Dana asked.

Rachel pointed.

“I would never say ‘I appreciate your understanding during this difficult period.’”

Dana waited.

“I’d say I’m sorry for the inconvenience even though Michelle keeps telling me not to apologize for everything.”

A smile flickered across Dana’s face.

“Anything else?”

“I sign emails with ‘Thanks,’ not ‘Best.’”

Tiny differences.

Meaningless to strangers.

Obvious to Rachel.

Nolan had known her well enough to impersonate her.

Not perfectly.

The imperfection gave her an unexpected satisfaction.

“He didn’t know me as well as he thought.”

That evening, she changed every password she had not already changed.

Then she removed Nolan as an emergency contact from accounts investigators had cleared her to update.

The process took hours.

Each deletion was mundane.

Each felt consequential.

Two days later, Chen called with news about the rural workshop.

Crime-scene personnel had searched the property with the owner’s permission after confirming Nolan had visited it in person.

They found no evidence Rachel had ever been there.

But the owner remembered something else.

Nolan had asked whether vehicles could approach the workshop without being visible from the main house.

The owner had thought Nolan wanted privacy for equipment deliveries.

Rachel listened.

Then asked, “When did he visit?”

Chen gave the date.

Rachel went silent.

It was the Saturday before she found the credit line.

That evening Rachel had been home alone waiting for Nolan.

He had told her he was helping Adrian with a business problem.

He returned late.

She had reheated dinner.

He kissed her forehead.

They watched television.

Rachel remembered asking whether everything was okay.

Nolan had said yes.

She had believed him.

Now, for the first time, she understood that while she was waiting with dinner cooling on the stove, her husband may have been inspecting a place where he intended to hide her.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: A second property search
