43 – As Nolan’s possible release moved closer, Rachel refused both revenge and reconciliation, choosing conditions that protected her without making fear the center of her calls.

Questions about address confidentiality.

Updated statements.

Potential conditions.

Rachel felt herself being pulled toward the old machinery again.

This time she resisted early.

She asked for one consolidated meeting.

“Tell me what decisions I actually have to make.”

The corrections advocate appreciated the clarity.

They sat in a conference room with Dana, Levin by video, and a supervision representative.

Rachel brought a notebook.

Not the old trauma notebook.

A new one used mostly for grocery lists and work reminders.

The advocate explained.

Nolan could be denied release.

Granted release.

Granted release with restrictive conditions.

Different factors governed the decision.

Rachel’s statement mattered but would not control it.

Good.

She did not want that responsibility.

“What can I request?”

No direct contact.

No indirect contact.

Exclusion zones.

No possession of certain identifying information.

Restrictions around financial activity depending on supervision terms.

Notice of changes.

No public discussion intended to harass or contact Rachel indirectly.

Some requests were straightforward.

Others depended on authority.

Rachel wrote.

Then asked, “Can I request that he not come within a certain distance of my mother?”

I looked at her.

The advocate said yes, depending on the order.

Rachel added it.

“You don’t have to.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because he used you in the situation.”

I understood.

Not sentiment.

Safety.

Levin asked whether Rachel intended to oppose release categorically.

She did not answer immediately.

“I oppose release without strong conditions.”

“That’s different.”

“Yes.”

“Do you want the board to know you are not demanding the maximum position?”

“Yes.”

I felt something complicated.

Pride was the wrong word.

Rachel was not morally superior because she refused revenge.

Someone else could reasonably ask that Nolan remain incarcerated as long as legally possible.

Rachel simply knew what served her.

She wrote another statement.

Short again.

Nolan had complied with incarceration requirements as far as she knew.

She did not deny that.

She also described the nature of his crimes and the sophistication of his control.

She emphasized that risk did not require physical violence.

Access.

Information.

Financial systems.

Third parties.

Manipulation.

Those mattered.

The statement asked for restrictions robust enough that Rachel would not need to monitor Nolan personally.

That was the key.

I do not want safety conditions that require me to watch him in order to know whether I am safe.

Excellent sentence.

The hearing occurred remotely.

Rachel chose not to appear live.

Her written statement would be considered.

No direct visual contact.

No opportunity for Nolan to address her.

This time absence was power.

She went to work that morning.

At eleven, she sat in a budget meeting.

No one except Michelle knew the hearing was happening.

At noon, Rachel ate a sandwich.

At one-thirty, Dana texted.

Decision expected later.

Rachel responded with a thumbs-up.

Then returned to work.

I was less disciplined.

I checked my phone constantly.

At three-forty, Rachel called.

“You know?”

“No.”

“Conditional release approved in ninety days.”

My stomach tightened.

“What conditions?”

She read them.

No contact with Rachel directly or indirectly.

No contact with me.

Exclusion zones around home and work.

No access to former joint accounts or stored identifying information.

Supervised financial-employment restrictions.

Mandatory continuation of treatment.

Advance notice to Rachel of approved residence and any significant changes where legally permitted.

Geographic distance.

Monitoring.

The board had taken the case seriously.

Nolan would eventually walk outside custody.

Within rules.

Rachel’s voice remained steady.

“How do you feel?”

“Ask me tomorrow.”

Fair.

That evening she did not want company.

Not Daniel.

Not me.

She sat alone.

Not because isolation felt safe.

Because she wanted room to feel whatever came.

Fear arrived first.

Images.

Nolan driving.

Nolan seeing her address.

Nolan appearing at work.

She checked the conditions again.

Then stopped.

Fear was generating scenarios beyond current evidence.

Rachel recognized the pattern.

She called Dana.

“I’m doing the thing.”

“What thing?”

“Turning possibility into expectation.”

“What do you know?”

“Ninety days.”

“What else?”

“No contact.”

“What else?”

“Exclusion zones.”

“What else?”

“Supervision.”

“What don’t you know?”

“Whether he’ll violate them.”

“Exactly.”

Unknown.

Not inevitable.

Rachel’s breathing slowed.

The next morning she called me.

“Tomorrow.”

“What?”

“You said ask tomorrow.”

“How do you feel?”

“Angry.”

“Anything there’s a date.”

Uncertainty had boundaries.

Ninety days.

Preparations could be made.

Then life would continue.

Daniel asked whether Rachel wanted him to move in temporarily around release.

“No.”

He accepted immediately.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“If that changes?”

“I’ll tell you.”

No offense.

No insistence.

Another difference.

Rachel updated home-security information.

Not because Nolan had threatened her.

Because release altered risk.

Reasonable.

She informed her employer only to the extent necessary.

Security received a photograph and instructions.

No office announcement.

No gossip.

Michelle handled it discreetly.

The garage remained unchanged.

Rachel debated adding another camera there.

Decided against it.

Existing coverage was enough.

“More isn’t always safer.”

She had learned that from herself.

The release date approached.

News reporters resurfaced.

Several requested comment.

Rachel ignored them.

One published the date.

That bothered her.

Public information can still feel invasive.

Daniel asked whether she wanted to leave town.

Rachel considered.

“No.”

“Because you don’t want him driving you out?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I have work Tuesday.”

Daniel smiled.

Practicality won.

On the release morning, Rachel woke before dawn.

The house was silent.

She made coffee.

Opened the back door.

Cool air entered.

The garage stood across the yard.

She walked outside.

The sky was barely light.

She unlocked the garage.

Went in.

Turned on the radio.

A weather report.

Music.

Advertisements.

Ordinary sound.

Rachel worked on a table leg.

At eight-fifteen, her phone buzzed.

Official notice.

Nolan had been released to supervised placement.

Rachel read it.

No location beyond what she was authorized to know.

No detail she needed.

She put the phone down.

Her hand trembled.

She kept sanding.

Not because she was proving courage.

Because the table needed sanding.

At nine, Daniel arrived with breakfast.

He did not ask whether Nolan was out.

He knew.

He placed coffee on the bench.

Rachel said, “He’s out.”

Daniel nodded.

“How are you?”

“Still here.”

He smiled slightly.

“Yes.”

They ate in the garage with the door open.

Across town—or perhaps farther; Rachel did not know—Nolan began whatever life followed prison.

That life was not hers to manage.

The first week passed without contact.

Then the second.

No violations.

No messages.

No third-party approach.

Rachel’s body slowly stopped waiting for impact.

A month later, a supervision officer called.

Routine update.

No concerns.

Rachel thanked him.

Then asked to receive only required notifications unless risk changed.

“Understood.”

That boundary became policy.

Six months passed.

No contact.

One year.

No contact.

Rachel stopped calculating.

Then, unexpectedly, she saw Nolan.

Not close.

Not violating an exclusion zone.

Across a parking lot outside a medical office in another part of the city.

Rachel had gone with me to an appointment.

Nolan walked from another building toward a bus stop.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray at his temples.

He did not see her.

Rachel stopped.

I followed her gaze.

My hand moved instinctively toward my phone.

Rachel touched my wrist.

“No.”

“He’s here.”

“He’s allowed to be here.”

“How do you know?”

“It’s nowhere near my home or work.”

She watched him.

Nolan adjusted a bag on his shoulder.

Checked traffic.

Crossed the street.

Ordinary.

No deputies.

No courtroom.

No dramatic music.

Rachel’s breathing became shallow.

Then Nolan disappeared behind a bus.

Gone.

I asked, “Do you want to report it?”

“He didn’t do anything.”

“Are you sure he didn’t see you?”

“No.”

That old answer.

Unknown.

Rachel looked at the empty bus stop.

Then at me.

“Let’s go.”

We left.

In the car, her hands shook.

She cried for five minutes.

Then stopped.

“I thought seeing him would change something.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did it?”

“Yes.”

I waited.

“He looked smaller.”

Not physically.

I understood.

The version of Nolan that had occupied Rachel’s mind for years was enormous because he once controlled exits, accounts, explanations, and reality inside their marriage.

Across a parking lot, he was a man waiting for a bus.

Still responsible.

Still dangerous in specific ways.

Still subject to conditions.

But no longer all-powerful.

Rachel did not contact him.

Did not tell him she had seen him.

Did not search his residence.

Did not check whether he had a job.

She drove me home.

Then drove herself home.

At her house, Daniel was fixing a cabinet door badly.

Rachel watched for several seconds.

“You’re making it worse.”

“Unproven.”

She took the screwdriver.

He surrendered it.

Rachel fixed the hinge.

Then made dinner.

Nolan existed in the same city.

That was all.

<a
