Elizabeth.

Older.

Silver hair.

The same woman from the photograph.

She sat in a plain chair against a blank wall.

Date stamp: five months earlier.

One month after the Bellweather motel stay.

My hands shook.

She looked directly into the camera.

“George.”

Hearing my name in her voice stop.”

“No.”

I restarted it.

Elizabeth said if I was seeing the video, Clara had either decided it was necessary or circumstances had become worse than expected.

She apologized for the years.

Not in polished language.

Not with excuses.

She stopped twice.

Looked away.

Started again.

She said there was no version of the story in which she could explain her choices without admitting they had cost me something I never agreed to lose.

My mother knew that.

She did not call it sacrifice.

She called it absence.

“I believed staying away kept you safer,” she said. “That belief may have been correct. It may also have become something I hid behind when fear turned into habit.”

I stared at the screen.

Anna looked away.

Clara quietly left the room and stood outside.

Elizabeth continued.

After Clara got her out of the private facility, they moved constantly for months.

Richard searched.

Victor searched differently.

He used banks.

Property records.

Doctors.

People willing to sell information.

Elizabeth eventually reached a lawyer outside Martin’s circle.

She created a new identity.

Then she disappeared into that identity.

“Eleanor Ross,” I whispered.

The video continued.

Elizabeth said she had taken copies of records tying Victor and Richard to a series of unauthorized transfers.

Some victims never knew.

Others discovered losses years later and blamed bad investments.

Money had been moved through Richard’s legitimate companies and returned disguised as profit.

The system depended on silence and time.

“What does that have to do with me?” I asked the screen.

Elizabeth answered moments later.

She said one account had been opened in my name when I was a child.

I stopped the video again.

Anna leaned closer.

“What?”

I replayed the sentence.

An account in my name.

I had never known it existed.

Elizabeth explained that Richard used custodial structures connected to me because they created additional layers between the original money and his businesses.

When she discovered it, she confronted him.

That was the argument Anna partially overheard.

Richard feared that if Elizabeth exposed everything, investigators would see my name somewhere in the financial chain.

“He used me,” I said.

Anna shook her head.

“You were a child.”

“That doesn’t matter if the records make it look otherwise.”

“It matters.”

“To a court, maybe.”

“To anyone who understands evidence.”

I watched again.

Elizabeth said Victor’s greatest fear was not prison.

It was losing control of the money that remained.

Some funds had never been recovered.

Some existed in accounts whose ownership had changed over time.

One structure, created when I was very young, could now legally pass to me.

I felt cold.

“That’s why I’m in danger.”

Elizabeth said if Richard died before everything was resolved, Victor might try to locate or control me.

He had legal documents prepared years earlier.

Agreements.

Authorizations.

Trust instruments.

Some genuine.

Some altered.

Victor had spent decades creating plausible versions of events.

“He’s not just chasing evidence,” Anna said.

“No.”

“He needs your signature.”

Clara returned at that moment.

She heard us.

“Yes.”

I turned.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Since when?”

“Since Richard’s funeral.”

My anger surged.

“You watched Victor speak to me and said nothing?”

“I watched him leave without getting what he wanted.”

“What did he want then?”

“To see whether Richard had told you anything.”

I remembered Victor’s funeral words.

Your father understood loyalty better than most men.

Not condolence.

A test.

“What happens if he gets my signature?”

Clara pulled a chair closer.

“He may be able to move money that currently sits behind structures tied to your identity.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“Thousands?”

She said nothing.

“Millions?”

Her silence answered.

I returned to the video.

Elizabeth warned me not to sign anything brought by Victor, Martin, or anyone claiming to act for Richard’s estate until I understood exactly what it was.

Then she mentioned the man who had just met Victor in Room 12.

Thomas Vale.

A former compliance investigator.

Elizabeth had hired him years earlier to trace the money independently.

“He works for her?”

Clara nodded.

“Then why did he give Victor an envelope?”

“Probably because Elizabeth told him to.”

“Why?”

We found the answer on the drive.

A file labeled DECOY.

Inside was a scanned copy of a document that appeared to identify a safe-deposit location.

The address was real.

The box number was real.

The contents described were false.

Elizabeth had created bait.

“So Victor leaves believing he has the next location,” Anna said.

Clara nodded.

“He’ll go there.”

“What happens when he opens it?”

“Nothing dangerous.”

I stared at her.

“That answer was too careful.”

Clara sighed.

“It contains a letter.”

“To Victor?”

“Yes.”

“What does it say?”

“I don’t know.”

“Of course.”

The video continued.

Elizabeth explained that Thomas Vale had been instructed to make contact with Victor only if Victor came to Bellweather searching for her.

That meant one thing.

Victor’s presence confirmed their fear.

He had not stopped.

Even after Richard died.

Even after Martin began confessing.

Even after decades.

He still wanted the evidence and whatever money remained.

Then Elizabeth said something else.

If Victor came to Bellweather, she would move again.

Thomas would know the next stage of the plan.

I looked toward the open window.

“He just left.”

Anna understood.

“We find Thomas.”

Raymond checked the camera feeds.

No sign of him.

Clara searched the room for a note.

Nothing.

Then Anna walked to the yellow star on the notepad.

She held it up to the light.

Pressure marks showed beneath it.

Writing from a page that had been torn away.

Raymond found a pencil.

We shaded lightly.

A message appeared.

NORTH DOCK.
