clean clothes, and a laptop.

The screen lit when I opened it.

A password prompt appeared.

Anna noticed a small yellow star sticker on the corner.

I tried died.

“You also have every right to refuse what I am about to ask.”

She explained Margaret.

Not as a mastermind from the beginning.

As the oldest surviving architect of the system.

Richard had learned from her, but eventually stole independently.

Victor helped both of them at different points.

Martin cleaned up the paperwork.

Everyone kept pieces on everyone else.

Mutual destruction became their version of trust.

Elizabeth had discovered enough to threaten all four.

That was why no single person could safely expose another.

If Richard fell, Margaret might fall.

If Margaret fell, Victor could.

If Victor talked, Martin was exposed.

A closed circle.

“Then why wasn’t Mom killed?” I asked quietly.

Anna heard.

Clara did too.

Elizabeth answered moments later.

Because killing her would have created scrutiny.

Discrediting her was safer.

Declaring her unstable.

Moving her.

Isolating her.

Then announcing a death that most people had no reason to question.

It was not one decision made in a room.

It became a sequence.

Each participant convinced themselves they had only handled one part.

That sounded horribly believable.

Elizabeth said Margaret eventually helped maintain the lie even after Richard lost direct track of her.

Not because she knew Elizabeth’s exact location.

Because a dead woman could not subpoena records.

A dead woman could not testify.

A dead woman could not make claims against trusts.

Then the video shifted.

Elizabeth leaned closer.

“George, there is something about you I hoped never to use as leverage.”

My stomach tightened.

She said when Richard placed financial structures in my name, he inadvertently created a problem.

One account required my authorization once I reached twenty-five.

My birthday.

The night Anna returned.

Not coincidence.

Everything tightened around that date because control had legally shifted.

“That’s why now,” I said.

Clara nodded.

Elizabeth continued.

Victor wanted my signature.

Margaret wanted something else.

She wanted me to disclaim ownership entirely.

If I did, the assets would revert through a chain of entities Margaret’s lawyers controlled.

“How much?” I asked.

The video gave the answer.

Just over thirty-two million dollars.

I stared.

Anna whispered, “George.”

I barely heard her.

The number meant nothing at first.

Too large.

Too detached from life.

Then Elizabeth said much of it was not clean money.

Some represented stolen funds.

Some belonged to victims whose identities she had reconstructed.

Some belonged to legitimate family investments.

Sorting them would take years.

But legally, at that moment, I controlled the structure.

I had inherited not wealth.

A battlefield.

Elizabeth’s final warning was simple.

Do not sign anything.

Do not speak to Margaret alone.

Do not assume Victor and Margaret still want the same outcome.

They had once been allies.

Now they were competing.

Then she gave me something else.

A choice.

She could disappear again.

If I wanted no further contact, Clara would arrange for the evidence to reach investigators and lawyers without involving me personally beyond what was unavoidable.

Or I could continue.

If I did, I would meet her.

Tomorrow.

No elaborate test.

No more years.

Tomorrow.

I leaned toward the screen.

The video ended before giving a location.

A new text file appeared.

7:00 A.M.

WAIT FOR CALL.

I looked at the clock.

1:43.

Six hours.

Anna sat beside me.

“You don’t have to decide tonight.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No. You have six hours to sleep.”

I looked at her.

“Did you face drained.

“What?”

She turned the phone toward us.

A message from an unknown number.

Three words.

GEORGE IS MINE.

Beneath it was a
