head.

“That makes no sense.”

Daniel continued reading.

The beneficiary was not Elizabeth because Edward trusted her.

It was because her marriage to Richard made her legally connected but financially outside Bennett blood ownership.

Edward believed an outsider with standing could break the family deadlock.

“But she was declared dead,” I said.

“Yes.”

“So legally…”

“Control passed temporarily through Richard’s structure.”

“And now to me.”

“Yes.”

“What happens if Mom is proven alive?”

Daniel’s silence answered before the words did.

Elizabeth whispered, “It returns to me.”

“Yes.”

The room seemed to tilt.

My mother had spent twenty-five years hiding from a financial system whose control still legally belonged to her.

Margaret looked furious.

Victor looked terrified.

And suddenly I understood something worse.

“If someone knew she was alive, they would have every reason to keep her legally dead.”

Daniel said, “Exactly.”

I looked around the room.

“Who knew the final page said Elizabeth?”

Daniel answered.

“Richard.”

“Martin?”

“Yes.”

“Helen?”

“No.”

“Victor?”

Victor shook his head.

“Margaret?”

She did not answer.

My eyes locked on her.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

I believed she hated the answer enough that it might be true.

“Then who else?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“One person.”

“Who?”

“Edward’s notary.”

“Name.”

“Louise Carter.”

Helen frowned.

“I know that name.”

Margaret looked at her.

“So do I.”

I said, “Where is she?”

Helen opened her laptop.

Then stopped.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She turned the screen toward us.

Louise Carter had died two years before Richard.

But her daughter still lived locally.

Rachel leaned closer.

“What’s the daughter’s name?”

Helen read it.

“Marian Carter.”

Clara whispered, “Martin’s secretary.”

Anna went still.

“The woman who controlled his files?”

“Yes.”

I remembered Martin’s final warning.

Someone had already been at his house.

Someone may have known what he was trying to confess.

I looked at Daniel’s number on the phone.

“Did Martin ever mention Marian?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The last time he called me.”

“What did he say?”

Daniel’s voice changed.

“He said if anything happened to him, don’t trust the woman who knows where every document is buried.”

<a
