so.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Harrison hesitated.

“You asked whether the medication would make Richard sick.”

Rachel’s face hardened.

“And what did Harrison say?”

Harrison looked ashamed.

“I said it could.”

Victor whispered, “Did I ask if it would kill him?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

“What did you answer?”

“I said with Richard’s heart, anything affecting rhythm could.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“And I still took it.”

“Yes.”

Margaret whispered, “Why?”

Victor looked at his mother.

“I don’t know.”

Helen answered from the phone.

“I do.”

Everyone listened.

“Martin recorded your call.”

Marian stared.

“He recorded everything.”

Helen had found another archived audio file.

She played it.

Martin’s voice.

Then Victor’s.

Drunk.

Angry.

Martin told him Richard was about to transfer control permanently.

Victor said he would stop him.

Martin told him there was one way to make Richard postpone everything.

A medical emergency.

Victor asked whether the pills would kill him.

Martin said:

“Not if he gets help.”

Victor asked:

“And if he refuses?”

Martin paused.

Then answered:

“That would be Richard’s choice.”

The recording ended.

Victor stared at nothing.

Martin had not merely arranged medication.

He had chosen the person angry and drunk enough to deliver it.

I asked Helen, “Is there more?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Victor called Martin again at 10:19.”

Dad had collapsed around then.

“Play it.”

Victor’s recorded voice was no longer angry.

It was terrified.

“He took one.”

Martin asked, “Where are you?”

Victor answered:

“Outside.”

Martin:

“Did he see you?”

Victor:

“No.”

Martin:

“Then leave.”

Victor:

“He could die.”

A pause.

Martin’s answer came softly.

“Then call an ambulance from the corner and pray he finally listens to someone.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Victor Remembered Leaving the Third Bottle for Richard,
