paperwork.

Directly.

We called Margaret.

She closed her eyes when Anna confronted her.

“Yes.”

“You used Diane.”

“Yes.”

“Did she see the present?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know what it was?”

“I told her.”

“Why?”

“I needed her to know what Anna might try to deliver.”

There.

Laura inherited the intimate details from Diane.

Not Martin.

Her mother had been inside the machinery from the beginning.

Mercer traced St. Matthew’s area.

Old school buildings.

Parish hall.

Vacant convent.

One property recently leased through a company tied to Laura.

We moved.

Police first.

Then us.

The building was nearly empty.

Clara sat in an upstairs room.

Hands tied.

Unhurt.

Laura was gone.

On the wall behind Clara:

seven account numbers.

B-17 branches.

And one message:

ASK ANNA WHAT DIANE GAVE HER THE NIGHT SHE LEFT.

Everyone turned.

Anna stared.

“I don’t know what that means.”

Clara said, “She kept repeating it.”

Anna looked genuinely confused.

Then she reached slowly into her purse.

Pulled out the old yellow-star wrapping she had kept folded around the wooden gift case.

The paper had been opened.

Refolded.

Handled for decades.

Anna stared at the back.

“There was something under the cardboard once.”

“What?”

“I thought it was packing.”

She peeled apart the aging inner layer.

A thin envelope slid out.

Nobody spoke.

Diane had hidden something inside the birthday present twelve years ago.

Before Anna disappeared.

Before George turned thirteen.

Anna opened it.

Inside:

a bank access card.

Old.

Expired-looking.

And a handwritten note from Diane Mercer.

IF RICHARD OR MARGARET EVER COMES FOR YOU, THIS IS YOUR PROOF.

On the reverse:

B-17.

My pulse hammered.

Diane had known about the hidden account long before Laura claimed to discover it.

Anna looked at the note.

“Why give this to me?”

Clara whispered:

“Because Diane was trying to protect you.”

Maybe.

Or recruit her.

Or plant evidence.

We turned the card over.

One authorized user name remained legible.

Not Richard.

Not Margaret.

Not William.

Not Elizabeth.

DIANE MERCER.

Laura’s mother had not merely known about B-17.

She had controlled access to it.

<a
