By the time my father died, he had enough seniority to understand exactly how a suspicious death should be handled.

That frightened me more than Leonard.

Leonard was a criminal who behaved like one when cornered.

Evan knew how investigations worked.

He knew what evidence mattered.

He knew what questions not to ask.

The detective working our case refused to speculate about corruption until records were examined. He wants the notebook.

There it was.

My father knew.

He continued meeting Evan anyway because Evan had access to old case files.

Dangerous alliances.

No clean heroes.

Only people trying to survive the consequences of earlier choices.

The detective obtained authorization to approach Evan.

He lived outside Tucson.

A team drove there.

I was explicitly told not to come.

This time I stayed.

Not because I wanted to.

Because Olivia had asked me to stop confusing participation with usefulness.

I went to the hospital instead.

She was being discharged under security arrangements.

When I entered, she sat on the edge of the bed while Rebecca helped adjust her sling.

“Do you know where you’re going?”

“Yes.”

“Am I allowed to know?”

Olivia looked at Rebecca.

Then at me.

“No.”

It hurt.

I nodded.

“Okay.”

She seemed surprised again.

A small thing.

But maybe trust was built from small things after being destroyed by hundreds of them.

I handed her a copy of the transcript from my father’s tape.

“I thought you’d want it.”

She accepted it.

“How are you?”

The question escaped before I considered whether she wanted it.

Olivia looked toward the window.

“Angry.”

I waited.

“Scared.”

I waited.

“Tired of discovering my life was used by people who didn’t know me.”

I sat across from her.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at me.

“Not everything needs that response.”

“I don’t know what else to say.”

“Then don’t fill the silence.”

So I didn’t.

We sat quietly.

It was probably the longest silence of our marriage in which I did not try to fix something.

After a while, Olivia said, “I remember something about your mother.”

I looked up.

“From early in our relationship.”

“What?”

“The first time she came to my apartment.”

Before we married.

Marjorie had walked through Olivia’s small apartment commenting on everything.

Pictures.

Furniture.

Books.

Then she noticed a photograph of Elaine.

“She asked where my mother grew up.”

“That seems normal.”

“I thought so.”

“What else?”

“She asked what my mother’s maiden name was.”

My skin prickled.

“And you told her?”

“Yes.”

“Porter?”

“Yes.”

So Marjorie confirmed Olivia’s identity directly.

“How did she react?”

“She dropped a glass.”

I stared.

Olivia remembered apologizing because she assumed her mother-in-law had been startled.

Marjorie blamed slippery hands.

Then she left early.

“That was when she knew for certain.”

Olivia nodded.

“She already suspected who I was.”

And afterward Marjorie became more involved.

Invitations.

Advice.

Questions about finances.

Comments about family.

At the time they looked like ordinary intrusions.

Now they looked investigative.

Rebecca’s phone rang.

The team had reached Evan Cole’s house.

Nobody answered.

His car was present.

The door was unlocked.

The house was empty.

“Gone?”

“Maybe.”

Then another message.

They found blood.

My stomach dropped.

“Whose?”

Unknown.

A small amount in the kitchen.

Enough to concern investigators.

Not enough to prove serious injury.

Evan’s phone remained on the counter.

His wallet was there.

His medication.

Everything suggested he had left unexpectedly or been removed.

Again, someone moved first.

The leak.

“Marjorie knows.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Or Leonard told someone.”

Leonard was under guard.

His communications were monitored.

The detective began treating information security as part of the investigation.

Only a small group would receive new developments.

E.C. had been the suspected leak.

Now E.C. himself had disappeared.

That suggested somebody above or beside him.

Another unknown participant.

The black notebook contained more initials.

We had focused on E.C. because of the recurring payments.

Maybe we had overlooked someone else.

That evening, Rebecca and I reviewed scans.

L.V.

M.H.

E.C.

D.M.

T.P.

R.H.

Then one unfamiliar set appeared repeatedly in recent entries.

S.K.

Payments.

Dates.

Locations.

Some entries contained only numbers.

A note from three months earlier read:

S.K. — keep D isolated.

My pulse accelerated.

“D.”

Derek.

Me.

Keep Derek isolated.

From whom?

Olivia?

My father’s records?

Investigators?

Rebecca traced S.K. through old Westbridge files.

Nothing obvious.

The detective checked Leonard’s known associates.

Several initials matched possible names.

No certainty.

Then Carlos called.

“I might know S.K.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

“You remember Stephen Keller?”

I did.

Barely.

A financial adviser Marjorie recommended years ago.

He had helped restructure some of my business debt when I opened Hale Automotive.

I hadn’t seen him recently.

Carlos continued.

“He called the shop three months ago asking questions.”

“What questions?”

“Whether you and Olivia were having problems.”

I stood.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I figured he was being nosy.”

Normal explanations.

Always normal.

“What else?”

“He asked if Olivia still handled the books.”

She sometimes reviewed shop expenses.

“He asked whether you’d changed banks.”

I looked at Rebecca.

S.K.

Stephen Keller.

Someone positioned close enough to my finances to influence decisions.

Someone Marjorie had introduced.

We sent the name to detectives.

The response came quickly.

Stephen Keller had worked as a loan officer at a firm connected to Leonard.

He also served as a witness on one of the forged power-of-attorney documents.

“Find him.”

Police went to his address.

Empty.

Neighbors said he left the previous evening.

Another disappearance.

Except this time a camera captured the departure.

Stephen loaded suitcases into his car.

He was not abducted.

He was running.

With him was a woman.

The image was blurry.

But I knew her coat.

I had watched it across my office hours earlier.

Marjorie.

My mother had left Phoenix with Stephen Keller.

The detective issued alerts.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Marjorie.

I opened it under supervision.

She wrote:

I wanted to tell you the truth myself, but Robert made that impossible.

Another followed.

Your father did not die because of the pill.

Then a third.

Ask what Evan gave him after you arrived.

I looked at the transcript.

Evan had remained in the house.

Quiet.

Mostly outside my memory.

My father had already been drugged.

He had collapsed once.

Paramedics were coming.

What could Evan possibly have given him?

The detective rewound the enhanced recording.

Near the final minutes, beneath my own voice and Marjorie’s screaming, technicians isolated a brief exchange.

Evan: “This will help.”

My father: “What is it?”

Then a sound like a bottle opening.

I had not remembered it.

But on the tape, it was there.

Marjorie may have drugged my father first.

Someone else may have done something afterward.

<a
