Those admissions could destroy what remained of his reputation and send him to prison, but none necessarily made him a murderer.

The flashlight changed that.

It had been recovered beneath Thomas Porter’s remains, trapped under concrete for nearly thirty years. years inside a red folder.

My father had not been innocent.

Marjorie was right about that.

But she had used his guilt as leverage.

That explained why he compromising about everyone else.

A web held together not by loyalty but mutually assured destruction.

The detective called again.

“Forensics found something on expose him specifically.

Evan panicked.

Thomas said he had copies proving a police officer had helped suppress fraud reports.

Evan grabbed the flashlight.

One blow.

Thomas fell.

Marjorie checked his pulse.

Dad arrived minutes later.

“What did Dad do?”

“Leonard says Robert tried to call Thomas steal from Westbridge.

She would say the records in his van were stolen financial documents.

She would make him part of the fraud.

Dad hesitated.

That hesitation became the moment he hated himself for.

By the time he decided to call anyway, Evan had taken his phone.

Thomas was dead.

Leonard said Dad walked out.

The others handled the body.

“What happened afterward?”

“Robert threatened all three.”

But he did not report them.

Not then.

Instead, he took the notebook.

He kept copies.

He waited.

Years.

Fear turned into guilt.

Guilt into investigation.

Investigation finally into a plan to expose everything.

And then he died.

I sat alone for a long time.

My father had taught me to change oil, replace brake pads, keep promises, arrive early, pay debts.

He had also taught me something without meaning to.

Silence could feel easier than confrontation until the cost of silence became enormous.

Maybe that lesson passed from him to me.

Different crime.

Same cowardice.

That evening, investigators identified the fabric.

Consistent with the coat in Rachel’s photograph.

Marjorie’s coat.

But the most significant finding came from Thomas’s damaged cassette.

Technicians recovered forty-three seconds.

Voices.

Thomas shouting.

Leonard.

Marjorie.

Then a blow.

A man shouted, “Jesus, Evan!”

Leonard’s voice.

Evan had likely struck Thomas.

Then Thomas groaned.

Alive.

That mattered.

The blow had not killed him immediately.

Another voice said, “Call somebody.”

My father.

Robert.

He had arrived.

Then Marjorie:

“No one calls anyone.”

My pulse pounded.

The final seconds were damaged.

But one phrase survived.

Thomas’s voice.

Weak.

“He has the other copy.”

Then Marjorie:

“Who?”

Thomas answered with a name.

The audio distorted.

Technicians enhanced it repeatedly.

Not Robert.

Not
