Ms. Harrison asked.

Tyler closed his eyes.

"Michael told me to record payments."

"Payments to whom?"

"People."

"What people?"

"People he owed."

Officer Reynolds stopped turning pages.

"What kind of people?"

Tyler's voice dropped.

"Bad people."

"For what?"

"I don't know."

"How were you paying them?"

"Drop-offs."

"How many?"

"Eight, maybe."

"With stolen money?"

"I didn't know it was stolen at first."

Then, slowly, the truth came out.

Michael had given Tyler five thousand dollars.

Family money, he'd called it.

Later he asked Tyler to deliver ten thousand dollars to a man in a parking garage.

Tyler had taken the money from me.

Michael promised there would be more.

After that came more deliveries.

Different locations.

Different phone numbers.

Michael sometimes vanished for weeks.

"Why the prepaid phone?"

"He said somebody was watching him."

"When did you hear from him last?"

"Three nights ago."

"What did he say?"

Tyler looked toward the photograph.

"He said it was nearly over."

"What was?"

"I don't know."

"What else?"

"He said he was coming home."

"Home where?"

Tyler looked at me.

"Here."

My skin prickled.

"Why?"

"He said there was something in this house."

"What?"

"I don't know."

"Think."

Tyler rubbed his face.

"He said you'd been sleeping over the answer for thirty years."

I looked toward the ceiling.

My bedroom was upstairs.

Before my parents sold me the house, it had been theirs.

Before that, the room had served as Dad's study.

Then another detail struck me.

The fireplace.

It hadn't worked for decades.

Dad had sealed it himself.

Tyler admitted Michael had specifically asked whether the old fireplace remained.

Officer Reynolds wouldn't let me go upstairs.

Two officers searched instead.

Minutes dragged.

Finally Reynolds returned.

"There is a hollow section behind the fireplace."

My mouth went dry.

Inside it, they had found another metal box.

When they carried it downstairs, I recognized it.

Black.

Rust along one corner.

A deep V-shaped scratch near the bottom.

Dad's document box.

I hadn't seen it since before Warehouse Two burned.

"He kept that in his office," I whispered.

"At the warehouse?" Reynolds asked.

"Yes."

Richard understood.

"If it's here, it wasn't inside the building when it burned."

Someone had removed it beforehand.

Then hidden it inside Dad's house.

Suddenly Michael's claims no longer seemed impossible.

With my written consent and police documentation, the lock was forced.

Inside were old ledgers, deeds, insurance records, photographs, letters and a cassette tape.

On top rested an envelope.

MARGARET.

Dad's handwriting.

Inside was a brass key and a letter.

My hands shook.

The opening sentence made me stop.

If I was reading the letter, Dad wrote, then Michael was alive.

I had to force myself onward.

Dad confessed that Michael had not started the warehouse fire.

The blaze had been arranged to conceal years of insurance fraud and falsified financial records.

Michael discovered the scheme.

He threatened to expose it.

Dad panicked.

He sent Michael away, supposedly for his protection.

Then the unidentified body was discovered.

Dad allowed everyone to believe it was Michael because men involved in the fraud were dangerous.

Years later, Michael contacted him.

Dad begged him to remain hidden.

He created a trust, intending one day to repair the damage.

Then came the line that broke something inside me.

I had not been meant to inherit a fortune.

I had been meant to inherit the truth.

The final paragraph said the brass key opened a safe-deposit box containing evidence.

Then the sentence ended abruptly.

Do not trust—

The lower half of the page had been torn away.

"Who?" Richard whispered.

Nobody knew.

The key was stamped 0317.

March seventeenth.

My mother's birthday.

Also the warehouse alarm code entered on the night of the fire.

Officer Reynolds asked who knew it.

Dad.

Michael.

Me.

Mom.

Then I remembered another person.

Dad's business partner.

Leonard Hayes.

He handled deliveries and knew almost everything about the warehouses.

He vanished from our lives not long after Michael's supposed death.

"Leonard Hayes,"
