Don't call Leonard. Don't answer him. I was wrong about—"

The message crackled.

Then:

"—your mother didn't—"

More interference.

"—case has the signatures."

A car horn sounded.

Michael spoke faster.

"Tell Margaret the fire was never about insurance. You. The warehouse. Everything."

Richard's voice became very quiet.

"And you didn't think that was worth telling anyone?"

Tyler exploded.

"I had just stolen thousands of dollars because of him! You think I was calm?"

"You had hours."

"I thought he was changing the story to save himself!"

I watched Tyler.

His anger was real.

So was his shame.

"What did Michael say about me?"

Tyler swallowed.

"He said you didn't plant the ledger."

Something inside me loosened.

Not forgiveness.

Not relief.

Something more primitive.

Recognition.

For twenty-one years, I hadn't known I was being accused.

Yet hearing Michael withdraw the accusation still mattered.

"What did Leonard tell him?"

"That you helped Grandpa falsify the books."

"I was twenty-four."

"Michael said Leonard convinced him you were involved."

"How?"

"He showed him documents with your initials."

I remembered initialing invoices for Dad.

Hundreds of them.

It would have been easy to move those marks onto papers I had never seen.

Marquez asked Tyler about the signatures Michael mentioned in the voicemail.

"He never explained."

"Could they be in the leather case?"

"Probably."

"What signatures?"

"I don't know."

The detective did not hide her frustration.

Tyler flinched.

This time I almost felt sorry for him.

He had been recruited because he knew enough to be useful but not enough to understand the machinery around him.

That didn't make him innocent.

It made him disposable.

"If Leonard used him," I said, "what happens when Tyler stops being useful?"

Everyone looked at him.

His face changed.

Marquez called for additional protection.

Tyler objected.

"I don't need cops following me."

"You may have delivered stolen money for a man connected to an abduction," she said. "Whether you need protection isn't entirely your decision."

I watched my son absorb that.

Consequences again.

Different ones.

By late morning, officers identified the SUV from traffic cameras.

Registered to a shell company.

The company address traced to a vacant office.

But another camera caught the vehicle entering Interstate 71 southbound.

"Toward Cincinnati?" Richard asked.

"Potentially."

Tyler stood abruptly.

"I know where."

Marquez looked at him.

"Where?"

He paced.

"Leonard mentioned a farm."

"What farm?"

"He and Michael argued about it once."

"Location?"

"I don't know exactly."

"Try."

"Near Lebanon. Maybe north of Cincinnati."

"What did he say about it?"

Tyler closed his eyes.

"Leonard said, 'You'd still be buried at the farm if it wasn't for me.'"

A cold sensation moved through my chest.

"Buried?"

"That's what he said."

Michael's supposed body had been recovered from a river.

Or so we had believed.

"What farm?"

Tyler shook his head.

"I don't know."

Marquez searched property records associated with Leonard.

Nothing immediate.

Then Richard said, "Search Hayes relatives."

That produced something.

Leonard's deceased sister had owned property outside Lebanon.

Thirty-eight acres.

An old farmhouse.

Two barns.

Transferred after her death to a limited company.

The same company that owned the SUV.

Officers moved quickly.

I hated how powerless I felt while they did.

Every instinct told me to get in a car and drive south.

Instead I sat at my own kitchen table.

Again.

Waiting.

Tyler's temporary housing arrangement was suspended until police decided whether moving him created additional risk.

He remained in the house under strict conditions and under supervision.

The irony wasn't lost on either of us.

I had finally removed him from my home, and a kidnapping investigation temporarily brought him back inside.

"This doesn't change anything," I told him.

He stared at the floor.

"I know."

"No. Listen to me."

He looked up.

"You are not staying after this is resolved."

His mouth tightened.

Then he nodded.

"I know."

It was the first boundary I had given him that he accepted without argument.

At 12:43 p.m., Marquez's phone rang.

She answered and immediately left the room.

I stood.

Richard stood with me.

Tyler didn't move.

The detective returned less than two minutes later.

Her expression gave away nothing.

"Police located the property."

"And Michael?"

"They found signs someone was recently there."

"Is he there?"

She hesitated.

"Not in the house."

"What did they find?"

"A chair with restraints."

Tyler turned white.

My fingers went numb.

"Blood?"

"A small amount."

"Whose?"

"We don't know."

"What else?"

Marquez lowered her voice.

"The barn contains a sealed interior room."

I remembered Tyler's phrase.

Buried at the farm.

"What's inside?"

"They haven't opened it yet."

Another call interrupted her.

This one lasted longer.

When she finished, she looked at me differently.

Not as a victim.

As someone about to learn something.

"They opened the room."

I couldn't speak.

"They found personal belongings."

"Michael's?"

"Some appear to be."

"Is there a body?"

"No."

I exhaled.

"But they found photographs."

"What photographs?"

"Your family."

My skin went cold.

"How many?"

"Hundreds."

"Taken when?"

"Over decades."

The question I had been avoiding finally formed.

"Was Leonard watching us all these years?"

Marquez looked at her tablet.

"Not only Leonard."

She turned the screen toward me.

One photograph had been taken through my parents' kitchen window more than twenty years ago.

Dad stood at the counter.

Mom sat nearby.

And behind them, reflected faintly in the glass, was the person holding the camera.

I leaned closer.

It wasn't Leonard.

It was Michael.

My supposedly dead brother had been watching our family long before Leonard brought him back into Tyler's life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Farm Photographs Proved Michael Had Watched Us for Decades, but One Picture Revealed He Had Not Been Watching Alone

Detective Marquez asked whether any neighbors had exterior cameras.
