Richard said bitterly.

I thought of all the harm committed under that phrase.

Mom said Rebecca became the bridge between Leonard and Michael.

Michael trusted her because she had originally brought messages from Dad.

Then Rebecca began altering those messages.

My stomach turned.

Another person managing Michael's reality.

Mom's voice trembled on the tape.

"Michael thinks Margaret betrayed him because Rebecca showed him papers with Margaret's initials. I tried to tell him they were false. He thinks Leonard saved him and Rebecca confirmed it."

Tyler covered his face.

The same lie had eventually reached him.

Passed from Leonard to Michael.

From Michael to my son.

A poison handed down as family history.

Mom continued.

After Dad died, she discovered that Rebecca and Leonard had reached an agreement.

Leonard would keep the old network hidden.

Rebecca would protect him from prosecution when necessary.

In return, Leonard would preserve evidence that could be used against people threatening either of them.

Mutual blackmail.

A partnership built on distrust.

"Why keep Michael alive?" Marquez murmured.

The tape answered.

"Michael remembers where Daniel hid the first copy. Leonard believes he can eventually get it from him."

But Michael didn't know.

That was the tragedy.

Dad had hidden evidence without telling him.

The fireplace box.

The bank vault.

Maybe more.

Mom then described Curtis.

Frank Mercer's son had come to her house at nineteen.

He was frightened.

Frank drank heavily and had begun talking about the fire.

Curtis had found photographs and records.

He wanted to know whether his father had killed Michael.

Mom told him Michael was alive.

That revelation apparently changed Curtis's life.

"Why would she tell him?" Tyler asked.

I understood.

"Because she thought he could help."

Mom asked Curtis to watch Leonard.

He agreed.

For years, Curtis fed her scraps of information.

Then Frank died.

Curtis inherited his father's debts and his connection to Leonard.

"He became what he was spying on," Marquez said.

Or pretended to.

Maybe both.

Mom's recording neared its end.

Then she said something that made Marquez pause the tape.

"Play that again."

Mom's voice:

"Rebecca came here yesterday. She says James has changed his mind. I don't believe her."

Yesterday.

The tape had a date.

Four days before Mom's death.

My hands went cold.

"Rebecca visited Mom before she died."

Marquez nodded.

The recording continued.

Mom said Rebecca wanted the key.

She didn't know which key.

Mom refused.

Rebecca became angry.

Then Mom said:

"If I die suddenly, look at my medication."

Nobody spoke.

I remembered the red notebook.

If anything happens to me, it was not Michael.

Mom had been afraid she would be killed.

And she specifically mentioned her medication.

"What happened to her medicine after she died?" Marquez asked.

"I don't know."

"Was there an autopsy?"

"No."

"Why?"

"She had hypertension. The doctor said stroke."

"Which doctor?"

I tried to remember.

"Dr. Halpern."

Marquez searched.

Dead.

Of course.

But pharmacy records might still exist.

Medical files perhaps.

The recording ended with Mom saying one final thing.

"Margaret, I am sorry I taught you peace was more important than truth."

I could not speak.

That sentence reached far beyond Leonard.

My entire life had been built around keeping peace.

With Richard.

With Tyler.

With everyone.

Don't provoke.

Don't embarrass.

Don't push.

Don't make things worse.

Last night Tyler had struck me and then told me not to push him again.

The same logic.

Peace purchased by my silence.

Mom had recognized it too late.

Maybe I nearly had.

Detective Marquez's phone rang before anyone recovered.

She answered.

Her expression changed immediately.

"Where?"

She listened.

"Do not move him until EMS clears it."

I stood.

"Michael?"

She nodded.

My knees weakened.

"They found him."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"An abandoned church outside Lebanon."

"Is he hurt?"

"Yes."

"How badly?"

"Conscious.
