Before Daniel died."

Richard searched his memory.

"He mentioned a man who came to your house one night. Said he was looking for Michael."

"I don't remember that."

"You were at work. Daniel was staying with us after his surgery."

Now I remembered.

Dad had spent three nights in our guest room after a cardiac procedure.

One evening Richard told me Dad had argued with someone on the porch.

Dad dismissed it as a salesman.

"Did Dad give you a name?"

Richard shook his head.

"No. But he said the man had a scar above his right eye."

Marquez immediately asked the team at the farm to search the surveillance ledgers.

Twenty minutes later, they had a possible match.

A name appeared repeatedly beside notes about Michael.

GREGORY LANE.

Former driver.

Former employee.

I remembered him faintly.

Not one of Dad's regular men.

Temporary work.

A few months.

Then gone.

"What happened to Gregory?" I asked.

Marquez searched.

"Alive."

That surprised me more than death would have.

"Where?"

"Columbus."

"Has anyone contacted him?"

"Not yet."

A team was sent.

Tyler looked ill.

"That was him."

"You're sure?"

"That name."

He remembered now.

The man outside the bar had told him his name before the argument turned physical.

Greg Lane.

Leonard's warning came back indirectly.

People Dad should never have done business with.

But Gregory had apparently tried to warn Tyler.

And Pike had helped erase the encounter.

"Why?" I asked.

Marquez understood.

"If Gregory knew about Michael, Pike may have wanted the contact buried."

"Did Pike arrest Gregory?"

"No," Tyler said. "He talked to him away from us."

"Then?"

"I never saw him again."

Richard stared.

"Did you ask?"

"No."

Of course he hadn't.

Tyler had accepted the version of events easiest for him.

The stranger was a drunk.

The fight disappeared.

No consequences.

Everything solved.

"Did Pike ever contact you afterward?"

"Yes."

"About Gregory?"

"No."

"What about?"

"He asked if I remembered what Gregory said."

Marquez's eyes narrowed.

"And what did you tell him?"

"That I barely remembered anything."

"Was that true?"

"Mostly."

"Mostly is not yes."

Tyler looked at the table.

"I remembered the line about the wrong dead man."

"And you didn't tell Pike?"

"No."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

I did.

Some part of Tyler had already understood that the warning mattered.

Even while he was accepting Leonard's money and believing Michael's story, some smaller instinct had preserved doubt.

Marquez received a call.

Gregory Lane's home had been found.

Empty.

Not abandoned.

Recently occupied.

Coffee cup in the sink.

Television on.

Back door unlocked.

No Gregory.

"When was he last seen?" I asked.

"A neighbor says this morning."

My stomach tightened.

Before or after Pike's leak?

Marquez asked the neighbor to describe any vehicle near the house.

Dark sedan.

No plate remembered.

Then Reynolds entered from the hallway.

He was carrying a thin manila folder.

"Internal pulled Pike's restricted-access activity."

Marquez opened it.

The list was long.

Too long.

For the past seven months, Pike had searched my name in police databases eleven times.

Tyler's name nineteen.

Richard's three.

Michael Collins twice.

Leonard Hayes zero.

"Why zero?" Richard asked.

"Because he wouldn't need to search someone he was communicating with directly," Marquez said.

Or because Leonard used aliases.

Pike had also searched Gregory Lane.

Six times.

Samuel Price.

Twice.

And Rebecca Varden.

Once.

"Why Rebecca?" I asked.

Nobody knew.

Then Marquez reached the date of Tyler's bar fight.

Pike had searched Gregory Lane six minutes before arriving at the scene.

He had known who Gregory was before he spoke to him.

That fight had not been random.

At least Pike's involvement wasn't.

"What happened to Gregory after the bar?" I asked.

The records showed no arrest.

No official interview.

Nothing.

Pike had simply removed him from the active incident.

"Could Pike have taken him somewhere?" Richard asked.

"Possibly."

Tyler looked sick.

"If he hurt Gregory because of me—"

I cut him off.

"Do not make yourself the center of that too."

He stared at me.

"If Pike hurt Gregory, Pike is responsible."

Tyler lowered his head.

Marquez continued through the activity report.

Three months ago, Pike accessed my vehicle registration.

Two months ago, my property record.

Six weeks ago, Richard's address.

Three days ago, the same day Leonard entered the storage unit, Pike pulled a neighborhood incident map around my house.

My skin went cold.

"That photograph of the house."

"He may have been helping surveillance."

"Or checking for cameras," Reynolds said.

Mrs. Brennan's camera had recorded Michael's abduction.

Maybe Pike had already known where surveillance coverage was weakest.

Then Marquez found another entry.

Pike had run a license plate at 2:19 a.m. that morning.

Seven minutes after Leonard and Curtis forced Michael into the SUV.

"Whose plate?" Richard asked.

Reynolds read the number.

It belonged to Mrs. Brennan.

My neighbor.

The woman whose camera later exposed the kidnapping.

Everyone stared toward the window across the street.

"He knew about her," I whispered.

Marquez immediately called for officers to check on Mrs. Brennan.

She answered her door unharmed.

But the discovery frightened me.

Pike had apparently been identifying witnesses before we even knew there was a crime.

"Was he on duty?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Did he respond to anything near here?"

"No."

"Then why was he running my neighbor's plate after two in the morning?"

Marquez's expression hardened.

"Good question."

An answer came from Pike himself.

He had been detained quietly.

Marquez told us only that Internal Affairs and state investigators had isolated him before confronting him about the leak.

He denied working for Leonard.

Denied knowingly exposing Michael.

Denied surveilling me.

Then investigators showed him the false Riverside information.

He stopped talking.

"Lawyered up?" Richard asked.

"Not yet."

"Then what?"

Marquez looked toward Tyler.

"He asked to speak to him."

"No," I said immediately.

Tyler looked at me.

"I want to."

"You don't know what he wants."

"That's why I should hear him."

Marquez agreed only if the conversation happened under controlled conditions.

I hated the idea.

But I forced myself to remember what I had demanded from everyone else.

Choice.

Truth.

Tyler was an adult.

He had to face the people he had involved himself with.

The interview was arranged at a secure building nearby.

I remained behind glass with Marquez and Richard.

Tyler sat across from Pike.

The officer looked ordinary.

That was the worst part.

He looked exactly like the calm man who had once reassured me outside the bar.

Pike studied Tyler for a moment.

"You told them everything?"

"Most of it."

Pike laughed softly.

"Then you're dead."

My stomach dropped.

Tyler held his ground.

"Why?"

"Because Leonard doesn't forgive embarrassment."

"Leonard's not in charge anymore."

Pike's smile vanished.

"So you've been talking to Curtis."

Tyler glanced toward the mirror.

Marquez leaned closer.

Pike continued.

"Curtis thinks he can trade names for freedom. He can't."

"Where's Leonard?"

"I don't know."

"Where's Michael?"

"You tell me."

"He's in a hospital."

Pike looked almost amused.

"For now."

Tyler stiffened.

"You leaked it."

"I passed information."

"To who?"

Pike said nothing.

"Rebecca?"

His eyes flickered.

Barely.

Enough.

Tyler noticed.

"You work for Rebecca."

Pike leaned back.

"I work for myself."

"That's what Leonard says."

For the first time, Pike looked angry.

Tyler saw it too.

Then he asked the question none of us expected.

"Who was Greg Lane?"

Pike's expression changed again.

"Nobody."

"You searched him before you came to the bar."

Silence.

"What did he know?"

Pike leaned forward.

"He knew when to be afraid."

"Where is he?"

No answer.

Tyler's voice sharpened.

"Did you kill him?"

Pike smiled.

"No."

Relief moved through me too quickly.

Then he added:

"Rebecca did."

Marquez swore.

Pike looked toward the mirror.

He knew we were there.

"Not recently."

Tyler frowned.

"He's alive."

"Was."

"When?"

My skin went cold.

The empty house.

Coffee still warm.

Pike had known.

"How?"

Marquez whispered.

Then Pike answered as though he heard her.

"Because Gregory called me."

"Why?"

"To say he was done."

"Done with what?"

"Watching Michael."

The surveillance records.

The photographs.

Gregory had been part of the network after all.

Not merely a whistleblower.

"What changed?" Tyler asked.

"He saw what Leonard did to you."

Tyler's face tightened.

"Me?"

"Gregory had kids."

Pike looked down.

"He spent years telling himself watching wasn't the same as hurting."

That sentence struck harder than expected.

Because everyone in this story had built moral distinctions narrow enough to live inside.

Watching wasn't hurting.

Borrowing wasn't stealing.

Silence wasn't lying.

A slap wasn't abuse.

Pike continued.

"Then Leonard brought you in.
