silent.

"Whose?"

"Mom's."

My stomach dropped.

"Evelyn?"

"Yes."

"What does she say?"

"I need you to hear it."

"Then bring it out."

"I can't."

"Michael."

"Leonard says the recording proves Mom made a deal."

"With Robert?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

"You."

The old pattern again.

Use Margaret.

My mother had been protecting me from before the fire.

"What kind of deal?"

"Robert promised you would never be touched if she convinced Dad to give up the ledger."

"Did she?"

"No."

"Then what's the problem?"

"There's more."

A sound behind him.

Claire saying something.

Then Michael whispered:

"Leonard says Mom gave them Samuel."

I froze.

"What does that mean?"

"He says she told Frank where Samuel lived."

"No."

"I don't believe him."

"Good."

"But the recording—"

A man's voice suddenly came through.

Leonard.

"Hello, Margaret."

Twenty-one years of damage had a voice.

Older than I expected.

Smooth.

Almost gentle.

"Put Michael back."

"He'll survive without controlling the conversation for thirty seconds."

"You taught him that habit."

Leonard laughed.

"Daniel's daughter."

"You used my son."

"I educated him."

"You turned him against me."

"He arrived angry."

"And you fed it."

"Yes."

No shame.

No defense.

That honesty was colder than Curtis's.

"What do you want?"

"The page Curtis gave you."

Marquez was listening beside me.

"I don't have it."

"You do."

"Then why ask?"

"Because I want you to bring it inside."

"No."

"James is bleeding."

"Then let him go."

"I can't."

"Can't or won't?"

Leonard chuckled.

"You really did change."

"You don't know me."

"I've known you since you were nineteen."

My skin crawled.

"Watching someone isn't knowing them."

"Tell Gregory that."

"I intend to."

Silence.

He hadn't expected Gregory to survive.

"Rebecca failed to kill him."

"Rebecca fails more often than she admits."

"Where is she?"

"Coming."

That changed everything.

"When?"

"Soon."

"Why?"

"Because Claire stole something she needs."

"Recording seven."

"No."

I looked at Marquez.

"What then?"

Leonard answered.

"The confession."

"Whose?"

"Rebecca's."

My heart jumped.

Claire had something stronger than the old recording.

"Rebecca confessed?"

"Years ago."

"To what?"

"Enough."

"Where is it?"

"Ask your niece."

Then Michael came back on the line.

"Margaret, don't come in."

"That is the first sensible thing you've said."

A pause.

Then gunfire exploded through the phone.

I heard Claire scream.

The line dropped.

Marquez moved instantly.

State officers converged.

I stayed in the vehicle because she ordered it and because, for once, entering an active shooting scene would not make me brave.

It would make me another problem.

Two minutes felt like twenty.

Then Reynolds's radio crackled.

Basement secured.

One injured.

No fatalities.

Marquez returned for me.

"Who?"

"Leonard."

"Shot?"

"Yes."

"By whom?"

"Claire."

I followed her inside.

The charity's polished lobby smelled faintly of lemon cleaner.

Children's drawings decorated one wall.

Photographs showed Rebecca presenting scholarships and standing beside smiling families.

Below that wholesome surface, a stairwell led to a basement full of secrets.

James Varden sat against a filing cabinet with blood dried at his temple.

Old, shaken, alive.

Michael was beside him.

Claire stood across the room with her hands visible while an officer secured a pistol on the floor.

Leonard lay on his side, conscious, blood soaking his trouser leg.

He looked at me and smiled.

"Margaret."

I had imagined this meeting in anger.

There was no satisfaction.

Only an old man on concrete.

"You destroyed my family."

Leonard's smile faded.

"No."

He looked toward Michael.

"I found it already broken."

Michael started toward him.

I stepped between them.

"No."

Michael stopped.

"Move."

"No."

"He—"

"I know what he did."

"You don't know everything."

"Neither do you."

Claire watched us.

She looked like Rebecca around the eyes.

And Michael around the mouth.

My niece.

A stranger.

"You're Margaret," she said.

"Yes."

"I'm sorry about your house."

Of all possible first sentences, that nearly made me laugh.

"We'll discuss burglary etiquette later."

Her mouth twitched.

Then she handed Marquez a small digital recorder.

"This is what Rebecca wants."

"The confession?"

Claire nodded.

"When?"

"Fourteen years ago."

The year Mom died.

My stomach tightened.

"What's on it?"

Claire looked at me.

"My mother admitting she changed Evelyn's medication."

Everything inside me went still.

"Changed how?"

Claire's voice dropped.

"She switched the dosage."

My mother had not simply feared Rebecca before dying.

Rebecca may have caused the stroke that killed her.

Michael stepped toward me.

I raised a hand.

Not yet.

I could not absorb his comfort while absorbing the possibility.

"Play it."

Marquez hesitated.

"Margaret—"

"Play it."

Claire pressed the device.

Rebecca's younger voice entered the basement.

"I didn't mean for Evelyn to die."

James's voice answered.

"Then what did you mean?"

"To scare her."

"By changing her pills?"

"She wouldn't give me the key."

"You could have killed her."

"I know."

"Did Leonard tell you to do it?"

"No."

"Robert?"

"He's dead."

"Then whose idea was it?"

A long silence.

Then Rebecca said:

"Mine."

My mother had spent her life afraid of men.

In the end, it had been a woman she once tried to help who crossed the final line.

The recording continued.

Rebecca insisted she had substituted pills to cause dizziness and confusion, hoping Mom would become frightened enough to surrender the key.

Instead Mom suffered a catastrophic stroke.

Rebecca panicked.

She restored the original medication bottles before anyone noticed.

James told her to surrender.

Rebecca refused.

"I have Claire to protect."

James answered:

"Stop using your daughter as permission to become your father."

Claire closed her eyes.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then a slow clap came from the stairwell.

Rebecca Varden stood at the bottom step.

Alone.

Elegant coat.

Hands visible.

Her gaze moved from Claire to the recorder.

"You always were sentimental, James."

Officers raised weapons.

Rebecca did not flinch.

"Judge Varden," Marquez said, "show me your hands."

Rebecca lifted them higher.

Then looked directly at me.

"I'm sorry about Evelyn."

I stared at her.

"No, you're sorry she recorded enough truth to outlive you."

For the first time, Rebecca's composure cracked.

And behind her, somewhere upstairs, an alarm began to scream.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: Rebecca Surrendered Without Resistance, but the Fire She Triggered Upstairs
